friend,s daughter got into her car and started the engine, unfortunately it was in gear and head butted the house wall, only damage showing was a small
crack in front bumper.
as she has protected no claims she informed ins co and took car in for estimate.
garage says that the rad mounting panel has moved and the car is a write off and they wont allow her to buy the salvage.
off to have a look on wednesday,i,m not a body work kind of person so is there anything about the ashtray that would cause it to be written off so
easily,i think the garage are trying to pull a fast one.
I don't think it's for the garage to say you cant buy it back.
Take it to another garage..
David
sorry, ins co says she cant buy it back
Sounds like a con to me - when did things change so that the garage decided weather you could buy the salvage ? Sounds like they are in bed with the
assessor , and have allready arranged to buy the `salvage` ..................
edit..........too slow

pink lightweight?how did i know that would be you?
If it's the insurance co thay say you can't buy it back then I think you are stuffed.
Normally it depends on the type of write off
C or D I think it is ( No expert)
One you can buy back the other you can't
david
for a minor dig, what are they made of cardboard?
i used to work in the insurance trade, and know a couple who still do. its becoming harder and harder to buy cars back off insurance companys because
they have contracts with breakers to take them as job lots. Also the government dont want "old" cars which have been written off back on the
road, so they make it harder for the general public to do so
We've just put a cat c Y reg corsa c back on the road no problem with the government. As long as it has a VIC check it's no problem but as mentioned the insurance may have a nice little earner going with a salvage yard and want to sweeten them with a few easy repairs

If it's an easy fix then simply don't continue with the claim and the car remains her property.
The front cross-member (presumably the part the rad sits on) could be pulled straight using a handy lamp post
^^I agree, but I used a tree, same one that damaged me car

agreed, although a bolt on replacement may be better if they are bolt on that is

Doubt that will help, sounds like the crumple zones each side that the cross member is bolted/welded to has done it's job and crumpled - you're not 'supposed' to pull them out so the car is usually written off as it's a lot of work to replace.
cheers for the input peeps, the point i am trying to get over is,if you kiss the wall the car is a write off?shirley that cant be right, they cant be
that weak,it was in gear and at starter motor speed
Seems to me this is how it would work-
Garage gives the insurance co a price =A
Insurance co compares the price with what they would have to pay out if they wrote it off =B
If A is greater than B, then write off. WHy sell back to owner? Put it in the salvage auction and get the best possible price. You could bid too if
you know where it gets auctioned

had a look at the car,it hit the door frame of the house, they wanted a new bumper,rad,fan,a/c condenser, mounting panel, headlight etc.
after explaining to the man in the suit that it didnt need all the other bits as they were only scratches and pulling the mounting panel out with my
bare hands, the are going to revise the estimate and repair it.
the place was stuffed with porker,s rari,s and massers.....v nice
