My Sierra xr4 failed the mot today on the rubber drive shaft boots and the steering rack...Nowt I know BUT..when braking gently I get a bit of judder
thru the wheel, now i have had Sierras in the past and all have done this and all had to have TCA bushes. If the rack had the play the examiner says
then surely I would feel that all the time and not just under braking.
If I jump on the brakes it's ok, only as I gently brake do I get the juddery bit.
Sounds a dumb thing to ask but does anyone have any idea where I stand with this as a new rack is £90 odd quid and I can't help feeling it's
the TCA's. Stops in a straight line and doesn't pull left or right.

We get the same ting on our transit connect but i have never been able to work out what it is.
warped disc maybe?
Starting to wind me up because I think it's going to still be there even after fitting a new rack...but MOT geeza was adamant it's the rack....If the new rack doesn't cure it can I bitch at him or am I just wasting my time with the way the system works?
Mot said all ok brake wise but "distorted and unservicable rack"....although it did say the plastic bumper has suffered from corrosion hence the sharp edge!!!!! I hit a cornish hedge(made of granite I might add) and nerfed the front corner.
Sounds like you have a good donor
Haven't you got anyone handy who can waggle the steering wheel to and fro while you have a look underneath? I find that just by holding the
track rods, rod ends etc. you can get a feel for where any excessive play is.
Drive shaft gaiters on a rear wheel drive car are not a failure IIRC only the outer gaiters on a FWD. Can check tomorrow. Brake disc distortion should have shown up as a fluctuating reading on the rollers , worn bushes wouldn't but should have been picked up on the suspension check.
judder can be sticking caliper slide pins - stick em in a drill, polish them with scotch brite and refit with a bit of silicone grease...

I had a granda that did this years ago, pucker 3ltr Ghia in Sweeny colours, any way I digress.
Failed on rack, I pulled the gators off and nipped up the rack ends, the ball joints had gone a little loose. These are pinned so a big monkey wrench
required, I then added a little weld to stop it undoing.
Tester was really grumpy when it returned as the rack looked untouched but the wear had gone so he was stumped but still wanted to fail it...

Perhaps you should give the rack a wipe down when you do it - say you fitted a recon one a mate had if asked.
Quick degrease and some hammerite
