OT - Ford TDCI starts but won't rev over 1200
MikeR - 26/2/09 at 12:03 PM

Hi, Got a ford focus TDCI 05 plate (face lifted).

Had this three times now. Run the car without problems. Leave it for a few hours - say go to the cinema. Come back to it and it starts prefectly but will not rev. Put your foot on the accelerator and its hesitant but will get to 1200 revs. Plant it and it very slowly builds up to .... 1200 revs.

Stop & restart the engine and its the same.

On each occasion after a while (perhaps 5 minutes) its sorted itself out. Sometimes i've tried lots of restarts, last night i just left it running.

Cars recently been serviced, got 60k miles on it. Normally runs well but judders a little under hard acceleration half way round the rev range (Which i'm assuming is the clutch / duel mass flywheel)

is it the 1.8?

does the glowplug light stay on/flash?

My 1.4 TDCi Fiesta has done this a couple of times too, not for a few weeks though. Strange.

how old is it?

trikerneil - 26/2/09 at 01:22 PM

My VW Passat sometimes used to go into "limp home" mode where the revs were restricted.

Is this possibly something similar?

had this with my tdci mondeo, turned out that all 4 injectors are fucked at £230 each + vat +surcharge

get the injection control pressure checked, its a dead giveaway and dont let fords fob u off like they did me!

MikeR - 26/2/09 at 02:07 PM

Its a 2.0l 2005 61,000 miler. I did add the diesel common rail ok cleaner into the tank when i filled it last. I think its only done it since - tempted to fill up again and never use the stuff in case that's related.

Not happy about potentially replacing 4 injectors

I've just had similar on my Peugeot 306 DTurbo 2L.
It's done 118K with no problems, serviced (inc. oil change) every 6K.
Just today the engine warning light (engine-shape with transistor-like overlay) has come on and full throttle, no load max revs are 2400.

Shortly aiming to trailer the MK for its SVA completion and then a 700 mile round trip scheduled for next week.
I hope it's not asking for new injectors - cost more than the car is worth!

I've just been investigating for anything simple or obvious and it looks as if the air flow meter is suffering from old age. One of the little sensing elements appears to be broken.
Off to get a new one tomorrow morning.
Watch this space for either a or a

I have the same on my merc sprinter. Runs just fine til a long stretch on boost, then it wooshes and the turbos gives up as it goes into safe mode (reduced revs and no boost). Mine resets after being off for 5 seconds though so its not the end of the world.

On mine, im 90% sure its filthy injectors. I put two bottles of injector cleaner in with a tenner of diesel, which helped for a few months. Injectors are sickeningly expensive, and thats before they break off in the block

Funnily enough, i find that if i pulse the throttle every 2 seconds it doesnt cut out *BUT* once it made a big bang and died completely, so i dont do that too much on long hills now!

It is very common on the early 2L TDCI (DW10 not PUMA) for the EGR valve to fail. This would cause hesitations when driving and if the fault was detected, it would put it into limp home / reduce power mode. If a fault has been set, it would need 3 engine start cycles with no fault present to reset the fault. This is why the fault goes away after a number of starts.
I would suggest looking at the EGR valve before you go dwon the injector route.
Good Luck

EGR valve arent cheap either was looking to have to replace one on my 04 plate Cmax myself as I had an eguine fault light took it to the garage and they said there was no light they put it on the m/c anyway and said fault history was egr valve.

Now that someone has mentioned about the hesitation when accelerating it makes sense.

Never did find out the price cos the garage said now the light is off they wont change it but if it comes on again to take it back and theyll replace it. The clutch was opn its way out too ended up trading it in and getting something else.

Unfortunately, it's a with my 306.
The old MAF was definitely damaged so I needed a new one anyway.
I hadn't realised that these faults can be reset/cleared after N 'fault-free' starts - I've started mine 3 times since fitting the new MAF. Maybe it needs more?
I've checked all the connectors that I can find and they're squeaky clean - no dirt or corrosion that could give a flaky reading.
So still searching

Mine did it again last night - only does it when the car has been left a couple of hours. Ie go to pub, sit and chat (drink coke etc). go back to car and ..... this is the weird bit.

Started hte car and kept it reving. It was ok, took foot off the accelerator and back to max 1200 revs. after a couple of minutes it was ok. So its not the accelerator pedal (i was worried by the fly by wire). The injectors work as soon as it starts so its something else.

MautoK - 27/2/09 at 05:48 PM

With my 306, it turns out to be the HP diesel pressure sensor at fault and the local Peugeot garage are going to fix it (along with the shot diff oil seal) on Tuesday. Not cheap - the sensor is £132 + an hour's labour + VAT - but if it keeps the old bus going, that's OK by me!

MikeR - 28/2/09 at 01:24 PM

Well did it again last night (after the pub - note i drink coke so its not me being pished).

Started fine, left my foot on the rev counter and it reved away, but without moving my foot the revs slowly died till it was doing between tickover and 1200rpm.

Took it to the independent ford place this morning and .... computer says EGR valve. As he played with the valve he could recreate the problem.

Blooming thing is hidden behind engine so i might as well get it replaced instead of cleaning it out in case it goes again (i don't work on this car as it has to get me to work to get paid).

Wouldn't worry about it, it's a diesel so you are pretty much on the rev limiter anyway

issue is its got feck all torque as well otherwise it would be fine.

(slightly concerned that i've read they use the EGR valve to help cool the turbo - not quite got my head round how that works but don't want to risk that as well. Going to really kick myself if the annoying little squeeky noise Ford insisted didn't exist turns out to be the EGR valve as i took it to them whilst still under warrenty).
