I am off to buy a car this w/e.
1 year old, 10-20,000 miles 1.8 or 2.0 Diesel, basic to mid spec, good mpg.
I am not sure which one to go for, the short list is:
1) Passat Estate, 1.9 or 2.0, S or SE
or
2) New shape Mondeo 1.8 or 2.0, Zetec or Edge (the 1.8 give much better mpg but is less comman)
Looking to spend ~£11-12K plus 1999 1.8 S Passat estate trade in with 135,000 miles.
You decide.........
I passed my SVA today by the way.

Having contemplated this myself recently, id probs opt for one of the sensibly priced new shaped Ford direct modeos.
Some good deals on Nissans too in there crunch beating clearance sales.
I believe the Mondeo is still classed as the best drivers car, along with the 3 series BMW. Having a mondeo myself and i really do understand why. Its a very nice drive.
Oh - and stop feeding in the curve balls! See Mac#1 post
I hope there is a tot of laphroig at Newark with M1MOC name on it????? (real stuff - not the asda crap!)
How about one of these?

If he keeps this one till it's as old as last one, the difference in retained value won't be worth the paper it's written on.
I'd buy the ford, and I've never bought Ford in me life

Hello
Having had a few passats as company cars i would say they are very well built and nice to drive, however i had the latest 2.0 litre 140 se spec car and
found it to be very laggy on the turbo!it did 3 windscreens in 12 months (they don't chip just crack) the guy at Autoglass said they are very
thin.
They are a big car with alot of room in the back and comfy.I was doing 75-85000 miles a year in one so feel qualified to comment.
The 1.9 Passat felt flat in power compared to the 2 litre.
I personally do like the Mondeo but would never have one!.they have a bit of a stigma attatched to them,Mondeo man and all that, the money also falls
off them.
The mondeo will depreciate alot worse than the passat.
Keith I've ben contemplating a Vectra SRi vvt 1.8 from Peter vardy cars in perth.
£6995 for an 08 plate with 20k on the clock and balance of warranty (2 years) left. Not estate though and I believe there are some conditions re
colours.
I'd prob go Mondeo as well.

Had a rental Mondeo recently. 1.6 saloon didn;t move at all but handled nicely and very comfortable. Back window distorted a little which I fdound
annoying, but estate would be different. So I'd consider one.
Alternatively, my old man looked at HOnda Accord estates recently - I've got the saloon diesel and it's excellent - his local dealer had a
couple of delivery mile estates in for 13k off list price.
Do you need 5 seats? Get a Passat CC. Lovely car and much better looking than the standard one unless you get a highline.
The new passats have alsorts of troubles and i dont like the look of the new mondeo. Id go for a Honda Accord 2 litre or CDTI. You can get hell of a
nice one with all the toys for your budget.
Just thought I'd throw this in as a wild-card. Not the most enthusiastic driving vehicle, but comfortable, practical and reliable - I have one by
the way.

Got a (company car) Passat 2.0 TDI (140) S myself, excellent car, bar the really naff front seats. Go for an SE, Sport or SEL and you get decent
front seats. Other than that can't fault the car on any level.
Chose it over the Mondeo as the lease price was no different and the company car tax was slightly less on the equivalent model.
If it wasn't for the stupid push button handbrakes they put on some Passat's I would go for the VW over the Henry.
Steve.
Just bought a Passat 1.9 TDi SE, 18 months old, 14,000 miles. Pick it up next week.
I've had both as hire cars. Passat is probably the dullest car I have ever driven, perfectly competent in most areas but just terminally bland. Mondeo is a much more involving car to drive, would be my choice every time.
And if you watch the Passat ads, the cars are driven very gently (eg bank robbers ad), so they don't get broken
