A friend of mine has an R reg 2.8 Iveco daily turbo.
quote:
I'm scared to drive anywhere in case i make it worse cos i think its metal scraping on metal inside the drum based on what i can hear. its an iveco 2.8 turbo daily, 10 days or so ago i heard lots of nasty banging, knocking noises sounded like was coming from rear, got out and had a good look 2 or 3 times couldn't see anything wrong.........then the noises stopped, and ever since then brakes have been squealing, like i say sounds like metal on metal, they didn't do that before
wheel bearing possibly
Arnt they discs on the back with handbrake shoes in the middle of the disc drum? Is it a single wheel or twin?
Does the handrake work? These are prone to diff trouble and wheel bearings collapsing.
Also the prop u/j's will make a similar noise when they break up which may explain your banging and knocking..
I'll ask about the handbrake etc now and post back.
What kind of routine should I do when I get to his van? I want to make the most of my time (i'll only be there a few hours) Even if I can't
fix it it would be great if I could give him a diagnosis. I was thinking: visual inspection under the van, then maybe jack each corner up and spin
the wheels by hand to see if that reveals anything. What else can I do? If a wheel bearing has gone would it be a case of fitting a new one or could
it have damaged the housing where it sits?
Many thanks for the help so far, I'll post back later when I know if his handbrake works, twin wheels etc
wheel bearings need to be replaced ASAP to avoid damage to housing/abs sensors/wheels and to stop the whole thing falling to bits!
watch for wheel wobble when you spin the wheel.
Thanks
Update: they are twin wheels at the back, he says the handbrake works and that there is only noise when he brakes. (i.e. no noise when just cruising
along).
Also he says: "For a while it was making banging/knocking/rattling noise all the time while i was driving, then that stopped and that's when
the squealing from the brakes started so"
Would any parts I need be easy enough to get hold of at a motorfactors?
Sounds like a defective driver to me, I'd replace that ASAP
