To Cut or Not To Cut
omega0684 - 16/3/09 at 11:09 PM

i have been debating cutting a hole in the side of my bonnet for a few days now, as you can see from the picture below the pipercross filter on my TB's sits right up against the bonnet,(imagin the bonnet being on)

you thoughts? yey or nay before i cut a hole i might regret?

If you do cut, whats the plan for what to do with the hole? Just leave it open (which may look silly imho) or put some mesh in there which although may still touch, would at least give better air flow????

A cold air supply will improve power and general running.

So cut away and get better airflow too

i have two lots of mesh i could use as a backing.

I'd say go for it - as mentioned you will get cooler air, and as your filter is touching the bonnet, more of it!! Can only be a good thing really assuming you want that mighty Pinto (ahem) to breath properly

im thinking after all the mods its had in the last 12 months it has earnt the title of 'THE STALLION'

if you dont cut it you will impede the airflow so wont have gained anything by using throttle bodies, plus cold air is also better, make a neat edging to go around the hole using alluminium and have the filter exposed

aliminium, urgh! im thinking Carbon Fibre!

If it fits without being deformed, I would recommend going down the air box route before you butcher your bonnet....I'm sure Clare can knock you something up....

was thinking that, but the mould that claire has would require me to cut the bonnet anyway. its designed to go over the pipercross filter its BIG!

get some k&n filters on there!

Airbox and central scoop gets my vote. More work though.

.....but it can be shortened

I'm sure you could make your own airbox to fit in there...

This is my air filter box, but with a closed front, a pipe out of the side and a filter on the other end of the pipe you'd have an airbox.

There are a few things to consider, e.g. the face opposite the inlets needs to be a minimum distance away, and there's usually a minimum or optimum volume requirement, but apart from that it's just sheet metalwork.

Scoops, bulges etc completely ruin the lines of the bonnet. Keep it enclosed if you can and I think you will find it makes very little difference to the perceivable performance.

Ages ago i had a post running about holes etc. I ended up cutting mine with a series of 3 triangles (middle one inverted) on eack side of the bonnet and backed them with mesh. I did some sketches to get the general pattern rquired, then put masking tape on bonnet to mark out what i liked best. Once happy, cut with rotozip tool and finished off with emery cloth. Take care and you can get a sporty rally style look.

Later though i changed over to bike carbs, fitted huge K&N challenger filter and cut big hole in bonnet - no shortage of air now.

Hope that helps for inspiration. Pics at end show what i ended up with, before mesh was added.

Cut a H slot in the bonnet and bend the edges back to clear the filter then get someone with a tig to weld a piece in to clear the filter and PU some mesh in the ends of the slot.
