Stone paint stripping
jlparsons - 23/3/09 at 06:41 PM

Ok guys, question for you!

I have a 1890s house with stone at the front (around the windws and door) that's painted. I want the paint off - a couple of neighbours have had it sandblasted off and it looks great. But I'm not keen on shelling out £500 notes for sandblasting!

Options:

1. Use some sort of paint stripper chemicals and wash/scrape it off.

2. Use a heat gun and scraper.

Anyone tried these? Any opinions or experiences?

Thanks folks!

I bet you could hire a sandblaster and do it yourself for a lot less.

I've seen it done once - they were using a water-based blaster (like a pressure washer) but with sand in the water. Obviously not your usual household pressure washer!

At the time I thought myself lucky not to be the one doing that job - very wet, messy and cold.

I wouldn't like to do it with a dry sandblaster - I reckon that the dust could be very harmful to your health. Even if you used proper grit (i.e. not sand) the particles coming off the wall would be just as bad.

any photos of the area you mean? i wonder if a normal pressure washer might do it, depending on the area, type of stone etc

Industrial steam cleaner?
Pressume if neighbours needed sand blasting paint is well attached?

There's a reason they used sandblasting as opposed to any other techniques...

PS you can get a sandblasting attachment for karcher pressure washers. However I would reserve judgement on how effective it would be...

Will try to get a photo. Sandblaster attachment sounds interesting... i have a pressure washer!

Cheers folks. Invaluable as always!
