Another obscure quick (ish) question

Anyone deal with drain piping on a regular basis able to help?

If I have a length of "standard" 50mm white waste pipe would a length of 40mm of similar pipe slide inside with a relativley snug fitting?

Is the figure given in catalogues the bore or total OD?

Most PVC pipe is 3mm wall. So the answer is no.

I'd say no!

You'll need an adaptor - just be careful that different manufacturers use slightly different sizes!

hmm.. on that basis.... 32mm would slide inside a 40mm pipe with a 1mm gap either side.... a bit of duct tape to act as a slide would solve that.....


Im trying to design a colapsable stand for a photography backdrop....

Not sure if I want to go for different sized tubes telescopic style, or just use the same size with lots of connectors pinned inplace with R clips...

Best to head down to a plumbers merchant or B&Q type place!

cant you use alluminium or a pair of tripods raised and adapted to support an alluminium tube from which to hang your backdrop ?

I could do... but I cant find any decent tripods for less money than some plastic pipe :p

I want a 3m span at 2.5m high....

I went 32mm pipe with push fit connectors.

Problem was the T peice between the legs and vertical at the bottom wasn't very strong so and it wobbled .... i added another T part way up and then put a 45 degree connector to make a stabiliser.

If i'd thought about it i'd have realised all i was doing was making the weak joint at the bottom a weak joint a 1/3 of the way up.

My revised and not yet implemented plan is to go back to one bit of tube for the whole vertical, but have a larger (40mm) T piece as the support and peg it to the thinner one piece tube.

It doesn't solve the problem you're trying to of making it size adjustable. One thing i thought about was getting two bits of tube, cutting a slit out of one and sliding it inside the other. The tube would then try and expand out giving some friction.

btw - 34mm OD waste pipe has a 2mm wall (so 30mm ID)

Hmmm...

Just been having a look at my plumb centre catalogue...

To get the bends, connectors, T pieces, pipe and R clips will cost me about £60 inc VAT....

I can get a proper backdrop stand for £75 ...... might be worth a bit more than a pile of pipes when I am finished with it!
