Making another engine work in a different car?
tegwin - 27/3/09 at 07:01 PM

Not locost related, but seeings as we can answer ANY question on here... figure it might be worth asking...

Im toying with the idea of replacing the 1.6 16V engine in my 2001 VW polo GTI with a VAG 20V 1.8T as fitted to the tt, Golf, Leon Cupra etc...

Doing the mechanical side of it will be a pain in the arris, but not impossible..

The electrics on the other hand... im stuck on...

I would want to keep the standard polo clocks..... Would be nice to keep a VAG ECU as well....

Anyone have any idea how hard it would be to merge the new engine to the car and make it work?

I still want the air-con, ABS etc to work properly with the new engine... something tells me this is going to be a nightmare!

(The car does NOT run can-bus.... it just pre-dates it)

eek, sounds a nightmare! anythings possible though, you'll need plenty of wiring diagrams from both cars i think

i managed to remove the engine from a 2.0turbo lancia delta evoII and fit it into a 1996 fiat bravo. the electrics were a piece of piddle tbh as i removed the whole engine loom from the delta including the immob bit and fitted it to the fiat.

the only bits i had to wire up into the existing fiat loom were ignition feeds constant lives and earths and i managed to splice the outputs for the gagues from the ecu into the fiat dash. the speedo was out by 5mph but i knew about it so compensated for that. everything else worked fine.

i would suggest you get the ecu pinout/wiring diagrams for both cars and study them until your eyes bleed.

With VW's proclivity for commonality of parts across the range I really doubt it'll be that hard. Just a case of finding which bits are compatible with which.

There was a PPC Dave Walker article about the 1.8t engine a couple of years ago. Maybe you could dig it out from somewhere.

If you want the 1.8 ecu then there are issues with later engine types so go for the older one. (I can't remember the details, it's all in that PPC mag).

As for the clocks, I would think you'd want the 1.8 ones.

ClubGTI has an excellent website. Probably worth joining.

What do is sell one car and buy the one you want --- otherwise all you end up with is a problem and a major financial black hole.

These days practically every part on a car talks to every other the days transplanting engines or even converting an automatic to a manual transmission are gone.

Was the "For Sale" sign on your house? Do you not see any of these programmes that says about "decluttering"?
Have to say, it's to my taste though!!

Possibly, but wheres the fun in that...

I really like the polo, its a good size, not too heavy.... but needs more power

Join club polo dot co dot uk and they have a very good build thread with all the details including a custom wiring loom setup.

give us a shout as we have two resident vag heads that are doing this stuff at the moment.

we have a golf gti thats getting a new engine grafted in at this moment
