The fibre is made from basalt rock which is crushed and then melted at temperatures of 1500°C. The extracted fibres are then transformed into a tube using the same technology as used to the Gitzo Carbon 6X tube. In fact, basalt tube shares many of the features of carbon fibre, like high thermal and dimensional stability, as well as being much lower in weight than aluminium - roughly 20%.

I suspect it's what the turbo insulating thing being shown in PPC is made from. Quite why you'ld want to make a tripod out if it I'm not so sure!!!

I had never heard of it, so I did a quick google search.

Apparently it was only declassified in 1996!

If its light and cheaper than CF, why isn;t it used more in motorsport etc?
