That's It!
mistergrumpy - 2/4/09 at 03:01 PM

Well I think I'm throwing the towel in.
I've got my retest booked for Wednesday as this is the only week I could get off since the start of the year and I can't get time off until July now when my 6 months has ran out and we're into IVA. The engine has developed the same problems again, from nowhere that it did on the test. Pain in the arse to start, hunting, stalling and the prop is clanging around like mad. The gearbox sounds all clunky and the prop is sort of jamming and stopping the engine so unless I can find a ZX9 C engine over the weekend I'm done.
To be honest I wished I'd never chose it as it was a pain from the start with all the wiring and I now have a deep suspicion of the gearboxes and clutches, just not made for cars!
Sodding thing! I'm thinking a CEC for the future but I don't know whether I can be arsed or afford all the rework and most of all the bankrupt inducing IVA

Throw that engine away and put a proper engine in it. You know it makes sense!!

mistergrumpy - 2/4/09 at 03:08 PM

Don't even know if a CEC will fit the tunnel. I'd have to get a new exhaust, new loom, new side panel probably and pay that £500+ IVA fee which I'm dead against.

Why not hire an engine crane, lift the engine out and have a good look at it, whilst its out you can see if its the prop or the clutch making the noise, and sort it.

I'm not great at mechanics, but I'm off tomorrow and happy to pop up and lend an uneducated but willing hand (unless SWMBO vitos it!)

If you are 100% that the engine is terminal then click this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/kawazaki-zx9r-engine-98c-1_W0QQitemZ230334716971QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycle_Parts?hash=item230334716971&_trksid=p3286.c 0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1689%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

you could then send this guy a message and see if he will end early for reasonable cash.

Its local, then swap across the case that is smashed from yours to the new one and your good to go.

£200 or £500 on IVA?

mr henderson - 2/4/09 at 03:13 PM

It could be worse! Being so busy at work that you can't get any time off til July is the stuff of dreams for some people!

While I'm cheering you up, the IVA is only £450

John

Can you get someone local to cast a fresh pair of eyes over the car and give you a hand? Dont give up now you can win.
Steve.

I'm pretty sure it's the gearbox clanging. The prop wouldn't jam like that and stall the engine. Also when the engine's on stands and running there's a banging, which is what I got pulled up on at the test.
Thanks for that link Dangle, think I'll give him a call. Don't know why I couldn't find that.
Oh and £450 is a rip off for what is not much more than an MOT.

well the offer of help is still there for tomorrow.

JAG - 2/4/09 at 03:33 PM

They're all right ^^^^^

You're too close to give up now, this is the last thing you've got to sort out and then you can get it retested.

Could a mate take it for the retest?

Anyone local that could do it?

Chin up mate

mistergrumpy - 2/4/09 at 03:34 PM

Cheers mate, but I'm working tomorrow anyhow. Looks like he'll end early on that engine too, thanks a lot.

stevebubs - 2/4/09 at 04:48 PM

Why not take the prop *off* and then run the car up?

Are you sure the adapter is bolted on tight and hasn't come loose so it's jumping on/off the splines?

Does it even fit correctly?

Defo worth someone coming along and casting an eye over the thing...

roadrunner - 2/4/09 at 06:27 PM

It,s just a bad engine , mine has been fine while it's been in the car, your too close to give up now. Chin up and get another engine if funds allow and keep the old one for spares or if i need to buy a bit of it.
Brad.

Still going then hey Brad.......... surprising considering the right shifty character you bought it off from what i heard!!!

I too would definately suggest undoing the prop bolts as suggested ^^^^. The prop adaptors do have a tendency to come undone so plenty of threadlock needed and running the engine up without the prop will at least identify whether the noise is engine / gearbox or transmission

Apart from the engine issue, surely it's better to take it and fail as at least this buys you an SVA re-test rather than IVA?

Pulling the engine apart is only an afterrnoons job, a new one £2-300?, you should always have a spare anyway

Keep thas chin up
