Bare with me on this...
I am 6 months into a policy with direct line on my polo GTI....(this is my first year of proper insurance....So no no claims!)
In june I turn 21, so insurance prices will drop considerably....
I could sell the polo and insure something like an Ibiza Cupra R (1.8T) for not much more than I am currently paying...with direct line....
But the ibiza looks horrible compare to the polo....
What I want to do is fit the ibiza engine into the polo.... BUT.. Directline wont insure a modified car until I am 25...
I found a company who will insure me on the modified polo for not much, but I have to be 21 and have 1 full years NCB...
I guess there is no way of getting the NCB from Directline without actually completing the full year with direct line?
I really want to get the polo modified and driveable for my 21st...
Anyone know of any insurance companies who would insure a modified hot hatch on 21Yr old with no NCB?
I had insurace on my jag last year (i was 21) with lancaster insuracne. It was on classic insurance but it is modified.
Il give them a ring, but classic insurance is usually a little special... the insurance on my TVR is only £400...
why not just get a turbo kit to go on your Polo GTI? would be loads less agro trying to fit it all in

do the conversion very slowly and leave the insurance running whilst you do it. when its done you will have 1years ncb be able to insure it.
p.s directline wouldnt insure my lancia delta turbo powered fiat bravo and i ended up having to have an engineers report on it before anyone would
touch me. getting an agreed value was also a pain in the ass.
clasdic policys work well with modded cars, but in my experience the car needs to be over 10yrs old.
perfornance direct are quite good for me on my heavily modded nova.
I struggled to get a quote on my Indy with anyone (currently 21, was 20 at the time).
Adrian Flux were the only people to offer me a quote, and it wasn't what I thought to be great value then! I'm guessing you've already
tried flux? A lot of the companies I seem to see offering insurance for younger drivers just charge through the roof 
Elephant offer a 10 month policy, whereby you pay for 10 months insurance, and get 12 months no claims, but this isn't much use to you now
Not to try and solve the problem too easily, but I'd just go with the Ibiza
