Handy tip for all those prescription charges - I have a pre-payment thingy , cost's about ten pounds a month by DD , and save's me a fortune
About 4 weeks ago I was doing a bit of work on the tintop with the dremel. I had goggles on but they got steamed up so I stuck them on my head and
didn't put them back when I started grinding again.
I got a flake of metal in my left eye resulting in a visit to casualty. Bloody painful but was washed out and examined and just a bit scuffed up.
Parking £3.60.
Obviously I was very lucky not to do any permanent damage but the cost of the whole episode was way more than I ever imagined......almost instilling
the valuable lesson.
The first prescription was for Chloramphenicol ointment £7.10. The eye cleared up in a day or so until.........
A week later I had an eye ball that was almost entirely red and was glued shut every morning. Next prescription Fucithalmic ointment another £7.10.
I also invested in an eye bath and wash at £3.95 and some regenerative Optrex eye spray at £9.97.
Another week goes by and the eye is only slightly better, more pink than red but the entire side of my face is swollen. Back to the docs who
prescribes Oxicin which is now £7.20 as it's after April 1. I'm told if it's not clear in 3 days to go back.
By this point my missus has also got an eye infection, apparently it's very contagious but no-one saw fit to tell me that!! She needs a docs
appointment so more parking £1.20 and Chloramphenicol drops at £7.20. Obviously the "relationship" costs were not insignificant!!
3 days later and it looks much better but I still can't see clearly so back to docs who refers me to an Opthalmic doctor at A & E. I spend 5
hours in A & E only to be told that they have no Opthalmic specialist and that I would have to attend a different hospital the next day.
Parking....another £3.60.
Opthalmic guy see's me and confirms I have cloudiness inside my eyeball and that it's a fairly deep seated infection. He dilates my
eyeballs making me look like a cartoon character, which means I can't drive home. Parking £4.80, refreshments while waiting to drive home
£3.50.
Opthalmic guy prescribes more Oxicin, some Pred Forte (Steroid) and Mydrilate (dilater) at £7.20 each (£21.60).
I have to go back in two weeks and I'm obviously hoping all will be well again so future costs probably £1.20 for parking.
So all in it's cost me £82.02. I've not had any time off work sick but I have had a bit off time off for appointments and stuff, luckily my
gaffer is quite reasonable so the time off work has not cost me anything but it's probably cost the company the best part of £300.
My missus has had two days off so far which is probably £160 or so, again the company obviously suffer there but not much I can do about that.
So all in the total cost is over £540.
Lesson learnt!!

Didn't the pharmacist offer to sell you the chloramphenicol ointment over the counter? It's been available that way for a year or so and
only costs £5.
Ditto the treatment for your wife (chloramphenicol drops have been OTC for 3-4 years now)........ No parking charges either......
Oh well, been there myself!!! Sneeky metal shards went round the side of my safety glasses....
I did a similar thing last year. They had to dig out the particle from my eye with a pointed stick. Not pleasant.

From the BBC website.
Prescription charges in Scotland have been reduced from £5 to £4 as the Scottish Government moves towards abolishing them by 2011.
Pre-payment charges for those suffering from long-term conditions will also be cut from £17 to £13 for a four-month period and down to £38 for a year.
The charge for an individual prescription item was £6.85 in December 2007 when phasing out began.
It will be reduced to £3 per item next year before becoming free in 2011.
Prescriptions are already free for everyone in Wales and will be free in Northern Ireland by 2010, but charges in England have gone up from £7.10
to £7.20.
You guys need a revolution in that little country sandwiched in the middle.

There are some hospital "trusts" that are scrapping parking fees too. Not before time.
