Black Number Plates

Whats the difference in using the standard white/yellow plates with black letters and the black plates with silver lettering?

Are the black plates only used for old cars or can they be used on new cars?

black/silver plates are only for cars from before 1974 or something around that time

Black plates with silver letters can only legally be used on the road on cars registered before 1973. Thats why you see them advertised as `show plates`. People do fit them on more modern cars but they stand out too much and you run the risk of being stopped!

Hi, the silver on black plates can only be used on a vehical first registered before 1973(either janurary or august, can't remember).
It is illigal on newer cars, but nobody seams to worry tomuch unless there is something else going on.

Cars registered in i think jersey can have black and silver number plates aswell.

the real diffence is that yellow and white plates are reflective.
if your lights fail it could mean the differnce
between a near miss and an accident.

My Personal Plate for my Car came off a vehicle pre 1974 and it had a black and sliver.

I did check and you are allowed to put a number from 1974 car on to a modern car but you have to change the colour to yellow & Black. Only allowed black on sliver IF the car you are fixing it to was built pre 197x

It must be yellow, reflective, compliant with BS whatever on cars first registered after Jan. 1973. You can't have variations in colour (or font, and yes we've all seen the odd fonts making a car look err... special to it's owner). Other things like spacing out the letters to form your name, etc., or somesuch is also illegal. The police don't seem to care though.
If someone rams the back of your illegally plated car... seems sensible not to provide the insurance guys with a visibility/road legality get out.

Now, whether the virtually horizontal stuck-on plate across the front of my 7 is strictly legal in its location...

However, ride a bike with a smaller plate than you're supposed to (I mean who want's a massive plate hanging off the back of a beautifully crafted sportsbike), regardless of font and colour, and you'll get stopped. Stallin's UK doesn't like bikes... I know this, I know this all too well.

Oh and yes, my 1967 landrover clearly displays a nice set of black and silver plates.

I got pulled over on the motorway and parked in a gravel pit whilst Mr PC Plod got his little ruler out to measure up my plate, thicness of letters, spacing etc. etc. with traffic zooming past 6 inches away. Basically if was one of these termporary reduced speed zones, 50 mph or so but cars were still zooming past at 60 mph, as did I. The car stayed on my shoulder for quite some time before pulling me over. Guess they were looking for any excuse.
