This seems to suggest that people aren't doing this for food, but just to get stinking rich.

if only they could make it a crime to pay a ransom.

Or just mount a few miniguns on the ships, rather than making them try to fend off attackers with a fire hose.

Full marks to the US Marine corps sniper that made the shot from a ships deck in mid ocean --- obviously a "Gibbs" type.

But the only effective way to protect the ships on this sea lane is an internationally backed convoy system with constant air cover.
