OT - Tin top exhaust pt2
speedyxjs - 14/4/09 at 04:39 PM

Just spent the last three hours repairing the blowing exhaust hoping that might stop or at least reduce the loud drone i have between 2100 and 2600 rpm but it hasnt worked. Mark Chandler suggested it was resonance.
Is there anything i can do to reduce this? I was thinking maybe exhaust wrap?
I need to get it sorted as the london to brighton jag run is a week sunday and driving at 60-70 mph is deafening.

is the exhaust under tension anywhere?that can cause resonance, try slackening the mounts and wobble it about a bit

just keep driving it i think. dad had a new exhaust put on his omega, makes a similar noise at similar revs. garage said it just needs to coke up.

i gather this is an old exhaust though?

The exhaust moves ok i think but there is now way of loosening them as there is only one mount to the new section which is at the very rear.
I forgot to mention that the new pieces are 28" of straight pipe.

Its the bend of the old exhaust welded to the new straight pipe.
Did his stop when it had coked up?

Drive at 80 higher rpm and all that

not yet, but its only been a few weeks. his car doesn't do many miles. its 6 years old and only done 35000 miles. it is a bit quieter now though

Are the new pipes the same gauge as the existing system?

I made the stupid mistake of buying a stainless system for my Civic from ebay; the pipes were so thin you could have wrapped your sarnies with it. It was always horribly noisy simply because of the pipes resonating, and even worse if you hit a puddle of water the cooling effect on the bottom half of the pipe bent the system so much it touched the body making an awful noise until it heated up again and straightened out.

I brought them from benzine. They are the same size (about 2mm at a guess)
