I thought the latest threat to ships and subs were supercavitation torpedoes for which lasers are completely useless against

Torpedoes don't need to be that fast. The Spearfish does about 80 Knots which is much faster than almost all submarines.....why do you need something that does 300 Knots ? How far is this super torpedo going to go (not very far I would guess)

What was always more interesting / scary where the wake following torpedoes the Soviets have which are enormous (in Torpedo terms 650mm across and weighing 4000Kg) and have a range of 25+ miles at a maximum speed of 50 Knots...there is a nuclear tipped version especially for killing US Carriers
