has anybody used the carbonmods carbon fibre skinning kit that they sell, is it anygood

haven't used but I came across the video on youtube when doing some research for my latest project makes it look quite easy but i bet its not that simple!

I was there when Paul was putting the kit together and the resins and activators etc that are in the kit have been specifically developed (for him) for that kit - ie they were developed for the home user.

The kit is pretty complete - you won't really want for much else apart from the scales and heat gun that is described anyway.

With regard to most things carbon fibre, Paul (the guy in the vid), could make pretty much anything look simple, but he has tried his best to see it from a first timers point of view and if you give him a call he will run through everything you need to know just in case anything is unclear from the video.

Having said all that, there is a definite skill to working with composites, and although you should be able to turn out a fine skin on something as simple as an airbox, if you wanted to start making quite complex shapes and for them to look good upon release, then you will have to put in a bit of practice to ensure a perfect part!!!

What is the black primer they use in the kit? It says its to give a black background for the carbon and for it to bond to but what actually is it? A type of resin?

Yeah, it gets mixed with a bit of hardener.

If you look on the website, as well as the starter kit you can buy the resins and matting in larger quantities.

I going to give it a go on some of the plastic trim on my elise to give it a bit of a refresh and some appeal before I sell it.
