Electrostatic magic powder coating kit?
owelly - 26/4/09 at 08:43 PM

I'm thinking of buying one of these powder coating kits. Are they any good? Has anyone used one?
I'm fed up of taking stuff to the powder coat place, 60 miles away, only to find I've got another bit to take!!

they are the dogs nuts. I went the whole hog and got a secondhand oven and a shotblaster. All my powdercoating is at least as good as the local pro place. It's just so easy to do, even my first piece was perfect.

just get one!

We bought one and when we got round to using it has given great results - rocker covers, wing top plates light surrounds etc
It does not give a really thick coat but is better than painting for bits you see. we have an old oven that we use and discovered that long bits can be stuck in hanging out the door and the heat conducts along the metal
Thought it would make a helluva mess but it is not bad

Splendid!
Thanks for the replies and I'll order one in the morning when I'm a bit less drunk.....

I've used a similar setup. Make yourself a plastic tent to shoot the stuff in. Contrary to what you would think, it doesn't all stick to the part! But it is easy to clean up as it all just falls to the ground.

Again, the curing is the hard part: you need a suitable oven or radiant heater that can go to 425 F.

Don't bother trying to use a hot air gun! Bloke on the stand where we bought it from Exeter kit car show said you can use one for small parts, but it seems to either blow all the powder off, or fuse the powder together but not to the metal surface so it comes off in a big sheet.
