On a hot water cylinder is it ok to use plumbers mate to seal the tank connections? My connectors keep dripping where the inch thread screws into the tank.
You can use that combined with some hemp or just ptfe tape.
But this requires undoing the thread to apply.
If you are talking about just splodging some plumbers mate around it, then it will leak again.

Iv put a new tank in and they leaked with ptfe.
if i use plumbers mait on the thread s without hemp will it work?
15 turns of PTFE has always sealed any threads that Ive fitted, that includes cylinders!
Plumbers mait is not designed for the use you want to put it to. Hemp and boss white will work, PTFE or PTFE and LSX together.

I go for 13 turns of ptfe just to challenge sods law
never leaks! I use my nail to make the first turn of thread show up but thats probably not
necessary.
did you put the ptfe tape on the right way? ie so it turns in on itself rather than undoing itself(if that makes sense)
