You know I just loath computers these days :o(
Mr Whippy - 29/4/09 at 06:17 PM

Really these things are bl$$dy awful, their spec's read are like endless startrek made up gobbledygook

I mean all I want is a flippin thing that goes on the end of a broad band cable to transmit wireless into my house so I can pick it up on my laptop!! aaaarrrhh!

I haven't a clue, spent the last 2 hrs reading geeky drivel that makes no sense whatsoever yet I know exactly what I want

which is -

1) Next door has a BT broadband hub

2) I've got a 30m cable connected into the back just like their computer is

3) I want something that plugs into the other end of that cable, in my house that transmits wireless broad band for my lap top to pick up

That’s it, all I want, how can this be hard?!?!

I'm sure its all a conspiracy to force me to buy broadband...

I need a beer or 5 can anyone help? I feel old

wireless hub or wireless access point

or if you want to get rid of your "modem" too then a wireless router (make sure you get either ADSL or cable depending on if it comes through your phone (adsl) or from virgin)

remember to get a wireless dongle for your laptop to receive the wireless signal if it doesn't have it built in.

Mr Whippy - 29/4/09 at 06:30 PM

thanks guys, I think I've aged 20 years sorting this out

is this thing what I want? - Netgear WG602 Wireless Access Point (gray box with an antena)

sorry the linky thing seams broken, forum's running very slow just now

Can I just plug the cable into it and away I go? The laptop picks up wireless already btw

Have I read this wrong or are you trying to 'borrow' next doors internet rather than pay for it yourself......!? nah, must have read it wrong

Am I correct in thinking that from the neighbours bt hub you have a 30 meter ethernet cable coming into your house and they have a shorter ethernet cable going from a different port in the same bt hub into there pc. Make sure that they are straight through ethernet cables firstly, the ends are wire up the same.

If you plug in your pc onto this ethernet cable are you able to surf, yes? If so all you will need is to take out that cable and plug it into a wifi repeater like these as all you are really wanting to do is extend the range of the wifi. So you'll be setting one of these up in Range Extender mode and not access point mode. LINKY

Of course you will need the neighbours permission and the wep key off the underside of the hub but as you've got ethernet cable plugged into it I presume you already have permission.

I've u2u'd my moby if you need to discuss further.

Cheers

Rich

Hi Richard

Yeah the actual reason I'm needing the 30m of cable is due to the foil backing on the houses outside wall plasterboard that both houses have which is basically blocking any signal 'shining' through the walls. I effect its like the houses are made of metal and unfortunately no windows face each other either to let any signal in to mine. With my laptop I can go to the furthest point in their house from the hub and get full reception yet 10ft away in my house from the hub and I get zero

thanks for the help, I think I now know what I'm going for. Yes next door has given me permission to use their broadband connection as its always left on and me using it won't cost them anymore.

If I can't get it sorted I'll soon ask you lot for advice

thanks
