you mean a timing disc, not a trigger wheel?

I got both from Burtons, tho the TDC finder is a bit sticky...

yes timing disc, the big disc you stick on the crank that has 360 degrees on it!

do i need one of these as well, what dti gauge do i need there are two available, on is metric and has a 10mm travel and the other is imperial and has an inch travel?

I found a disc on line that i printed of and glued onto some card. Made a pointer out of an old wire coat hanger and utilised an old threaded hole on block to bolt it onto.

Used a DTI to check lift on the rockers, very similar to the one in your pic. It has to be said though that a cylinder head doesnt provide the best surface for the magnet, was very tricky to get it set up - but possible with a lot of patience.

Just checking!

They have a tool that (supposedly) screws into a plug hole, and it has a central spindle which is moved by the top ot the piston. cost about 5 or 6 quid I think - needs two people tho, as it doesn't actually screw into the plughole...

If you've already got the head off, then any dial gauge and mag-mount should be useable for TDC finding, as well as valve timing...

I've got a cheap (probably chinese) dial gauge as well as a Mitutoyo and a Mercer, and for setting up cam timing etc. it's perfectly adequate for the job.

Having three gauges is a bonus for setting up DOHC engines though, one down the plug hole, one on the inlet follower and one on the exhaust follower. I made a simple bracket out of angled aluminium for setting up the cams in my brothers Elise, you can't easily use a magnetic clamp with an alloy head.
