Did you not listen to Harriet Harman on Radio4 this morning? Sounded fairly desperate to get it all quickly under the mat by trying to concentrate of the 'evil Telegraph moving into chequebook journalism' angle.

Biggest scandal so far IMO is the MP's who have been renovating properties on the taxpayer before selling them and buying the next run down house - rinse and repeat.
Nice little property business there, Sarah Beany would be proud of the profit margins.

I'm also prepared to wager none of the ones defrauding the tax system get prosecuted - seems some have different 2nd homes registered depending whether they're claiming expenses or paying council tax/capital gains. She REALLY didn't want to talk about that one.

The problem that most people don't seem to be able to grasp is that these are 'allowances' and not just expenses. If the claims are allowable by the rules (I think introduced by Thatcher to allow MP's to benefit without apparently getting a big salary rise) then the comlaints should be against the rules, not the individuals claiming them. And while the right wing press in this country (In this case the Torygraph) only seem to bang on about the Labour party, It's all parties who are claiming equally (eg look at Sin Fein who won't even send MPs to Westminster)

AndyW - 8/5/09 at 03:11 PM

as usual the whole country complain and moan about these issues (expenses) and moan about tax increases but then when it comes to an election we only go and vote them in again. The country has spoken, voted. How many people actually dont vote (bet its lots) and then they moan and groan about how the country is run. If you dont vote dont moan......

Im having a grumpy day

Its bloody highway robbery, claiming for redecoration etc. what the hell has that got to do with being am mp. Its sickening to think that we pay thru the nose in taxes. I think in my next tax return i might try to claim for some redecoration and a saffron bloody carpet.
