Wasnt too sure where to put this.
Has anyone used a 1 or 2p piece as a spacer or even maybe a washer?
Just thinking locost and all that

Locost but illegal

I bought some penny washers once...

The bloke charged me over 6p each for them.

Mind you, that's not as bad as my 2lb hammer... that was 15 quid.

That's inflation for you.

yes, "defacing the queens head" is the official title.

Back to the days of decimalisation or just before when a small value coin of copper was more valuable in weight than the face value. People were just melting down the copper or using them as washers. An instant way of making money apparently.

The royal mint soon realised their error and introduced this law...

But who's going to undo a nut and bolt to see if someone has used a penny etc? Plus the age old question of "who did it?".

No it's not, the law that made it illegal was repealed in 1981*.

Biggest problem is they aren't flat so they make cr*p spaces/washers.

* The original offence was under the Coinage Offences act 1936 (section 26)

The act was repealed in it's entirety by the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act of 1981

i have seen a picture of it, wasn't it someone on here, dont know where else i would have seen it, used a couple of 5ps somewhere on the end of throttle cable at the carb end?

I used some 5p coins for my throttle return spring. They work just fine.

I find coins make perfect packers/spacers for using with pulling tools etc.....

I also have 4 1pc pieces in my carbs to replace the wax stats origionally fitted.... as said.. cheaper than buying real "spacers"... But I wouldnt want to use them as washers etc...the material integrity is debatable!

does that mean you're car is worth more now?

tegwin - 18/5/09 at 12:01 PM

No... but with the queen overseeing the mixture control on the carbs.... it sure does run nice!

When I was an Apprentice an apprentice master sent one of the apprentices for some food with a £2 coin.

The bill came to £1.93 so the apprentice being a bit of a joker drilled out the centre of the 2p coin and pressed the 5p coin into it.

When he gave it back he said it was a 7 pence coin
