Just been watching yet another repeat
of Top Gear on 'Dave ja vous'. They have
put a Prodrive car round their track. Car is
a one off, their own design using Subaru
engine. It is not going into production.
Question is, does this count as a kit car?
Seems to meet all the criteria to me!
If this is the case, why do they say kit cars
can't set lap times for them.

It can't be a kit car cos not sold as a kit for home assembly. Then again it's not a prototype if it's not going to going into production. Suppose concept car fits a bit better but most of these don't actually work so suppose it's just a one-off.

but you can scratch build your own car,

there's plenty on here, they are not
available to purchase either
that's all Prodrive have done.

well, no i don't think it is (although people do)
if you build everything yourself then its a one off. regardless of if it looks like something else.
if you go to tesco and buy one of the blueberry muffin things, it come with a cake mix, you add water and the can of blueberrys, thats a kit.
if you make your own from flour, milk, eggs, sugar, butter etc, thats not a kit, thats making it from scratch

Top gear exclusions:
A "non-qualifying" vehicle is one that does not
meet the presenters' requirements to remain
on the board, that is, one that is not a "road car".
This means being available to buy and being
fully road-legal (lights, indicators, registration,
etc.), as well as being street-worthy (i.e. able to
negotiate a speed bump)

er, i don't think it does, as its supposed to be for production cars you can go and buy, or order and have it delivered ready to drive, and can
get over speed bumps.
so no it doesn't qualify
to Clarkson then
