I am going down to South tommorow to pickup a van to use as a camper...

The Van is MOTd until July but is currently on SORN.


I have been given quotes for insurance and will phone them back first thing in the morning to buy it etc before I leave in the morning.


But... If the van is not taxed I cant drive it back... Is it possible to tax it with so little MOT remaining? and having only just bought insurance? (So no certificate etc?)

My worry is that, if I phone the DVLA to Tax the vehicle they will refuse, saying that it is not insured etc as the insurance policy was only taken out a few hours before?

I also wont have a tax disk if I buy the tax on the phone... and cant buy it in the post office as I wont have an insurance certificate

Are there any ways round this problem?

I just need to get the van back here tomorow!! (preferably legaly!)

If you do a quick google, you'll find that some insurance companies allow you to take out insurance online and then print out the certificate yourself. I don't know about doing this for camper vans though.

You can tax it with a day of MOT left AFAIK.

I am not sure about the insurance - if you go to a Post Office you need to have a bit of paper from the insurance co, but I don't know how quickly the DVLA's insurance database gets updated.

Aah... I have got the answer. You book an MOT at a test station near your home, then you are allowed to drive with no tax, as it is "pre-arranged". I am sure that you can speak to the garage beforehand and arrange to "cancel" it on arrival

Dayinsure certificates are not acceptable for buying tax. Why not just get the insurance company to either email or fax you the certificate?

Swiftsure - The documents are emailed and you print them yourself..........

As said you need only a day or 2 mot left to tax it. BUT you cannot tax with a home printed cert. It must be a proper cover note.

If the insurance is sorted and on the dvla computer intime then u should be able to tax online. Then your taxed but still can be done for not displaying but only if you get spotted.

Failing that hire a transporter for the day and get it on that. No worries then.

Got 4 days insurance for £37 so im set to go

it was easy tegwin, i did this the other day (with my own van as it happens). Insure for a week, then get it taxed online. Print out the receipt and off you go! Who cares about not displaying anyway, they do it all off computer. I had a tax disc at home for 3 months without anyone noticing it wasnt displayed.

be carefull your find that the wording in the road traffic act states a garage within a reasonable distance. i read about a guy who tried his luck with taking it to one a few hundread miles and got nicked for it! swift cover are excellent for insurance though!!!!

But you wouldn't take a vehicle 200 miles away from your home to MOT the thing. Then, if it fails then you have to drive back to the original garage which is then 400 miles to get it re-tested!!! It should be the garage closest, within reason, to the owners home.

Again I think it really depends on what kind of bobby you fall on. Some will throw the book at you and others would see you have made an effort with insurance etc and tell you to "get on your way and not to be seen again!!".
