hi folks, got a transit diesel, whilst at a scrapyard a piece of rebar put hole in sump pan. Is there any way i can weld the pan up whilist in van? Or will i just kill myself trying?
It would be quick difficult unless you are very tall and double-jointed
Not a good idea, you'll almost certainly set fire to the remaining oil in the sump.

I cant see a good enough reason to stop me from doing it (speedbump`d my sump at work , now it has a tiny leak :mad

its possible you will set fire to the oil in the sump, but if its only a very small hole the oxygen shouldnt be able to feed the flame for long... its
a risk, but i dont think there would be an explosion, i dont think oil is that volatile
If its a big hole (probably bigger than say a 50p) id take it off...
edit to say you shouldn't have the issue with contaminated weld if you weld a piece on that is bigger than the hole, and make sure the outer
surface is clean

go back to the scrapyard and get another pan
Actually I've done just this before on the cortina after I put a tear in the underside when it hit the ground (it was though a quite spectacular
jump ). As it turned out it was a doddle to do and no the engine doesn't go up in flames.
Do pour some oil in to flush the bottom of the sump after welding to remove any tiny bits of weld splatter.
Drain the oil (probably self drained if there's a hole anyway 
) and leave the dip stick out to allow any pressure from heating to escape.
Should be fine then to weld a patch on the outside.
Keep a fire extinguisher handy just in case - CO2 or Powder IIRC, but not water.
If you're tigging it, set a long pre weld purge and purge the engine via the hole the rebar made (obviously not if its a tiny crack)

Assuming it's an end-of-life van and you're in a hurry, there really is nothing to worry about.
Drain the oil, jack the thing up (assuming there's something solid on the thing to place the jack under) so the residual oil runs away from the
hole. Clean as best you can and weld a plate on. It won't be pretty, you'll get voids, but it'll work. You will get a fire in sump, but
there's very little oxygen in there to support it. Throw some water over the sump to cool in all down. Put the oil back in (strain it if you can
first). I've done this on a series Land Rover, in the field, no problem.
If the van is at all valuable, replace sump, or remove and weld.

I know a guy who has just replaced a rusty holed sump on a ford van, new one was only about £40 iirc.

Um..........this solid chunk of carbon would have to get through the oil strainer and then the pump and filter first so that's not a major worry

It smokes a lot but I don't think there was enough air to sustain a fire.
