can anyone explain why some rads have inlet and outlet on the same side and others are on opposite sides? what are the benefits etc or is it just for convenience

Have a look at this site http://www.aaronradiator.co.uk/
I understand they do a wide range of rads and show dimensions on the site which should help.
The VW rads seem quite popular and cheap.

what radiator are you after?

take a look on ebay - theere are 2 or 3 companies that do alloy radiators - circa £ 100 whcih is not bad IMO.

Thye tend to be mostly for japanese tin boxes so if you can find one that fits, you are quids in. (I am looking for one cortina size and most are much too wide. I keep meaning to ask them if they do different ones but not gotten round to it).
