Whilst driving home in the van just now, i had to stop at the railway. When i switched the engine on, i had no response from the throttle at all for about 5-6 seconds and then all was fine. Then i remembered the driver who normally uses the van said it was doing that the other day.
Has anyone ever come across this before?
Im not sure if it is a cable throttle of the dreaded fly by wire crap.

yep its fly by wire. theres no mechanical throttle on diesels so no need for a cable.

That particular van/engine only has 1 potentiometer with no back-up if it fails, so best to get it looked at....

Theyr electronic throttle. The problem might not necessarily be to do with the throttle. It may be en engine sensor not picking up so the ecu is stopping you revving it.
There is differences between tddi and tdci aswell.
Get it plugged in.

Hee, hee - dont know about dangerous, but they do serve a useful diagnostic purpose. A buyer at a place I used to work was complaining that his Audi wasn't accelerating well; he took it to the dealer, they stuck the reader on, pressed the throttle a few times and diagnosed ........ that his mat had slid forward and was stopping the pedal going full travel
