Donor front wheel drive set-up
myke pocock - 17/6/09 at 05:58 PM

As there is a wealth of expetise on here I thought I would pose this question. I am looking for a complete engine, gearbox, subframe and suspension package of a minimum 1600cc to drop into the back of a light weight hatchback shell of some type. The setup needs to be one complete unit, have any easy to convert gearchange setup for rear wheel use and preferably have carbs (but not definately) so that kind of dates it somewhat. Shell wise I was looking at Peugeot 106, Citroen Saxo, Citroen AX or anything else that is easy to modify. The reason for this question is that I want to build a Class 8 classic trials special but need a roof over my head as the Boss, 'er indoors, passengers for me and she likes some level of comfort (ie; not open top!!!)

I'd be tempted to go for a MK1 MR2 engine (4AGE) Chuck some carbs on it. Its already rwd rear engine so little work required to make it fit.

As Mark G says you should be able to get a 4-age from an mk1 Mr2 fairly easy. The shells rot away long before the engines die.

Very small and compact engines and boxes too.

Only thing to watch is them popping out of 5th.

Sounds good, Myke!
Many years ago there was a Morris 1000 Traveller with VW engine and transaxle in the back!
If you really want a challenge, try Class 1 - very competitive these days.
John.

btw - the 106 / saxo doesn't have a sepetate subframe - so you'd need to do a fair bit of cutting and welding....
