My son has a 1983 Mini 998cc on SU carb & dizzy fitted with points. Everything seems adjusted OK and it starts fine when cold but refuses to start when the engine is hot. Any ideas? Cheers Barry

do the usual checks for sparks and fuel.

I seem to remember that condensors and/or coils can cause this when breaking down.

if it is an electric fuel pump then it could be that too - try tapping it with a screwdriver.

Tight tappets , rich mixture, incorrect dwell /points gap and timing will all affect starting when hot as will sticking carb dash pot or lack of oil in it. Check the basics first

83 mini, 25 year old SU carb. Bet the jet is stuck down in the choke/enrichment position. Look for a brass tube sticking out the bottom of the carb directly in line but opposite the piston. Usually push back up but you will need to fettle linkages, etc so it slides in and out when the choke is operated. Should improve the MPG when corrected.

Make sure the heat insulating spacer is present between the inlet manifold and the carb. Since the inlet and exhaust manifolds are one casting, the inlet gets very hot.

Try another coil, it's prob heating up and breaking down as said above, common problem
