Unbelievable

Just dipped the oil on my girlfriends car (citroen c3) and the plastic bit on the end of the dipstick snapped off in the engine is it worth taking the sump off or will it be ok just leaving it?
Thanks

i should think the dipstick itself will drop too far in, so its probably ok. i wouldn't like it though.
how old is the car? ie, under warranty?

Its an 03
No warranty
Thanks

this happened to my sisters audi, just bought a new dipstick for a fiver and forgot about it. no problems so far!

Hoped someone would say that. Its a totally unneccessary design isn't it!

Leave it in there.

Could always try draining the oil in the hope that it slips out of the drain plug.

It'll be alright right up to the point when it finds it's way into somewhere it should be...

how far has it dropped down the tube?
i've got this little thing i found, its the size of a pen, but extends like a car ariel, and its got a little tiny magnet on the end. if you can find one you might be able to fish it back out the tube?

but the bit is plastic, maybe one of those claw things.... might work.

depending on the size, i'd try draining the oil first if you really wanted to get it out.

Leave it where it is, it's not going to get past the oil strainer so its very unlikely to be of concern. If it flushes out with the next oil change then that will just be a bonus.

ah, he said the plastic bit broke off the dip stick, the dip stick would still be metal. i don't think i've seen a plastic one

All renaults 1998 onwards have plastic dipsticls - and usually break - very common. Usually find that the old dipstick will come out when you push in and pull out the new one. if not then the sump comes off.

TBH if it was mine id leave it there

andrew-theasby - 4/7/09 at 07:16 PM

Thanks, think ill do an oil change pretty soon and hope it comes out then. The dipstick went all the way in, so i presume its in the sump rather than the tube

See now this is a good one - "common problem" why don't they bloody fix it if they know it happens all the time?

The plastic tip at the end of the dipstick has broken of inside the engine, at least that's how I interpret it. Unlikely to cause any problems to be honest.

i thought plastic handle, leaving the actual dipstick itelf in there

I see how you misunderstood now, no its the bit that has the max/min on it. Absolutely no need for it to be plastic, the rest of it isnt.

Not true. We have a 2000 kangoo and the dipstick is all metal except the handle.
