Well after filling the wifes car with petrol rather than diesel, putting her in somewhat of a bad mood, the hoover blew up. We've had it 10 years so we've probably done OK. The thing is I know nothing about them so don't know what to replace it with. Are Dysons that good or just plain expensive?
ive got a dyson,excellent for dog hair,tesco sell clones of them a bit cheaper,no idea if they are any good or not
Hi, I work in comet and dysons never come back faulty, apart from when the filter is not cleaned every 12 months or so.
We had an upright Dyson and it didn't last very long before the bearings went in the motor. The hose also split after about a year.
Crap quality from my experience.
I've got Henry now and it's excellent, but not an upright.

our dyson was recieved second hand so i dont know its age, but the hose has split as above (its a totally crap design really, very short hose that
doesnt reach anywhere), and one of the plastic nozzles broke. However, it is excellent on carpets when upright. VERY poor on rugs that have uneven
pile.
I wouldnt pay the price for a new one. For work i got a £200 makita vacuum extractor that is VASTLY more powerful than any vacuum ive ever seen.
Get a Henry, got one at home and got one at work.
Put up with so much sh*t, the dyson we had before at work broke every week, bits fell off, they dont suck up elastic bands where as henry does
everything and dont make a fuss and is silent compared to a dyson
have to agree with above, we have two of the none vertical dysons and they have both broken several times!
hoses break regularly, pipe racket mechanism is cr*p, motor burnt out on one of then! got replacement parts from ebay as dyson just try to rip you off
for parts after the warranty runs out, thieving ba**ards!

all professional cleaners ive seen use henry's too 
Had our DCO4 (Clutch model) for about 6 years now - replaced once a brush bar.
Works perfectly but feel it's coming to the end of it's life now. It's hoovered copious amounts of brick dust, soot and Cat Hair
every-single-day over that period - I'll certainly be getting another when it's gone.

We've got a Dyson upright model. It is fairly good at sucking up the dust, etc. but the quality of the plastics is very poor - bits cracked and broken, plus the flexible tube extension thingy has split. Not sure if I would go for another Dyson tbh, but I can't recommend anything different!
as above, dc04, about 5 years old, replaced a pointless bagless hoover broken a tiny bit off around the handle when i dropped it, but no affect on use, works well, even after hoovering lots of plaster dust, long hose, long handle/wand thingy ok by me
Last time I took some rubbish down to our local recycling center they had an area for vacuum cleaners that had about 30 machines in it. A good 2 dozen were Dysons. Ours is crap as well. I had a Karcher in my workshop for 10 years and apart from filters was never a problem till it got run over
I almost got chased out of the Dyson factory for using the name "hoover" just have several above have done, you "hoover" up

I was firmly told its a "vacuum" cleaner, and I mean firm it wasn't taken very well at all.
We have a Dyson ball, dunno how good it is, guess I better ask ? Floor looks clean though.
Just buy a Vax --- ours cost 50 quid we replace it every 4 years or so.
Often B&Q have special 3 in 1 deals on Vax, Argos are sometimes surprisingly cheap also.
i definatly meant hoover, it was good for about 20 mins use before the filters clogged, swapped after 6 months for the dc04 ;-)

I can answer this one easily - get a Miele - we have had them all - Vax, dyson, and whilst they all seem reasonable at first, they paled into
insignificance when we followed Which? advice and bought the Miele S4281 - Marvellous machine - 6 settings 300 to 2000 watts - ultra quiet. Only
complaint is the length of the lead. Not cheap, but the best. (the henry is not bad, either, if you are looking lower budget).
we've got one of these ! had it for ever and think it will last till the sun burns out!

Our Dyson was utter crap. Most people I know say they last about 5 minutes. Although that may be just down to the filters as suggested above.
Good mate of mine fixes vacuums for a job. He said Miele are good and wouldn't touch a Dyson but the only one he'd recommend is a Henry.
He reckons he's just now starting to fix the ones he sold people 20-25 years ago! All the parts are still current, they're ridiculously
powerful (mine's 1400 watts), direct motor drive. Holds 5kg of crap. Huge long cable. etc. etc.
So Henry it was for us and it's been great.

Had a dyson it was crap. off the back of the which review we got a miele Cat and dog TT5000. cost £250 but its by far the best hover on the market
extended 5 year warrenty for £20 included in the box not that were ever gonna need it.
my parents have one too and my brother run over the pipe and crushed it after hovering out his car. the spare part was easy to get and cheep
forgot to say. i have used it many many times to hover up all the swarf from my lathe and build area and its still going strong as the day we go
it.

We had one of the original Dysons that endured a long and very hard life, and I have nothing but praise for it. However, it finally expired (motor
burnt out) and my wife bought a bagless Electrolux (which happened to be on special offer) and it's heavy, extremely noisy, clogs easily,
difficult to empty and not very effective. I wish I'd replaced the motor on our original one, but we'll be going back to Dyson shortly.

In an attempt to make it slightly more appealing, I bought my missus the "Hetty" which is the pink, female version of the Henry. She seems happy enough with it (and she can be picky!)
Our Dyson (not an upright) has been going for 5 years and still sucks as well as the first day. Had plenty of plaster dust etc through it over the
years and gets bashed around frequently.
Wonder if there is a difference between Uk and Malaysian built machines? Could explain the fairly wide gulf of experiences people are reporting.
Also they really don't like water, suck it up really well but it kills them. I remember the instructions mentioning it specifically so I think
it's likely to be a common killer of them.
