Link to Dymag who make carbon fibre wheels. Says a chap who works there, an 18" 10J wheel weighs 6.2kg and a full carbon bike wheel is 2.5kg vs 7kg or more for an alloy. They're tooling up for wheels for the KTM Xbow and expect those to retail for £900 each

A forgotten advantage of aluminium or magnesium alloy wheels is they have a major effect on brake cooling.

The best part half a century back Rootes entered Sunbeam Tigers in the Le Mans 24hr race. All was well until they took them to the Sarthe circuit for the practice weekend and discovered the brakes (which incidentaly much the same spec as Cortina brakes) were history after a couple of laps of slowing the heavy Sunbeam at the end of the Mulsanne Straight
Between the practice weekend and race they switched to the original Minilite Magnesium wheels, problem solved.

they're not just pure carbon fibre though are they? i thought that would be too brittle on its own. i thought it would work like f1 cars, carbon/ali honeycomb sandwiches mmmmm sandwiches

No they arent just carbon, they are a carbon/kevlar mix. I did contact Dymag last year and talked to them about having a set but then found that they only do 18's. No good to me. Magnesium wheel need a lot of maintenance due to the fact that the metal is porus, hence all mag wheels are painted.

We have a set from a GT3 race car, in one of our offices. Some of our chaps have been working to look for chepaer manufacuring routes for these things. Unfortunately, they would be a little large for the kit car!
