I have a 20 year old pump... the mecahnical seals have failed.. so I need to pull the thing to bits and replace them...
I managed to remove one key.... But the one the other end is seriously stuck in its slot...
Is there any way of removing them without damaging the shaft?
The key is a half moon shaped thing sat in a corrusponding slot....
Once I do get it out... can you buy new woodrogh keys from somewhere?
Its a fiddly little bugger... but I really need to get it done... I was quoted 120 labour to do it...which is just silly!
Can you not weld an extension piece to the key to gain a bit more leverage on it?
hmm.. I could, but would risk welding the key to the shaft..... its veeeery small!
Usually a small cold chisel on the end of the key and a sharp clout with a hammer will dislodge it. Hit it along the direction of the shaft.
Won't damage the shaft, but depening on how hard you hit it you may need a new key....

David.. I tried that... and it buggered the top of the key and didnt move.. Maybe I need to hit it harder!

Hi. If you need to look for them it's spelt Woodruff.

Have you tried tapping one end down with a small hammer? This usually cases the other end to lift and the key to slide in the slot. Also apply
heat.
BTW, it's spelt 'Woodruff' - should help you when searching for replacements.
If i was doing it i would warm up the shaft first , then apply a freeing oil as this with any luck would get sucked in when it cooled , then use a
flat ended punch on one end then the other to try to rock it free.

You need to accept you're probabley going to lose the key but....
Drill it out. Get a drill bit just undersize of the key and drill down. Don't worry if you don't quite reach bottom. Repeat this along the
length then simply punch the ends in over until the key releases from the shaft. Dress the slot and fit a new key.
Suggest with the new key you drill and tap a hole in the centre for future removal of the key.
