Anyone got it? Is it worthwhile over Freeview?

Would it simply be a case of fitting a dish and taking the existing aerial cable to the dish?

Also, what box? Humax Foxsat HDR?

You'll need a dish + the correct sort of cable (low-loss, low-noise stuff). If you've got a Sky dish on the side of your house then that's ideal.

Maplins sell sat dish kits, and I'm sure there's loads of other places.

Satcure sell dishes & stuff, and sell downloadable books to tell you how to install them.

if you dont want a pay monthly contract and already have a dish,just get yourself a sky plus box, a twin co-ax from dish to box then you can record one channel and watch another at same time. there is a good choice of channels which are free.

House was being extensively refurbished and I decided I was not going to renew my Sky contract, so have not made provision for 'satellite' cabling. The aerial cable have obviously just been renewed... would 'standard' cabling do if connected to a suitable dish?

Think you need proper twin satellite cable.

I have FreeHD with a PVR Humax box and love it, get to watch BBCHD which is excellent, and plenty of other channels, and no monthly subscription, got rid of Sky+ after 10 years with them.... and even better interface for recording programmes.

Ah, too late then! The cabling is in and it would be a complete PITA to add further cabling!

So, it's just digital TV, Yamaha sound bar, separate PVR box and my PS3.

Need to stop watching so much junk on TV anyway!

You can use your original dish cable and LNB for use with Freesat but you'll need a twin LNB and an additional cable if you want to watch one show and record another via a Freesat PVR set up other than that no problemo.
If its a short cable run you can get away with standard TV coax.

You cant get Sky+ Daniel unless your a subscriber to sky.

Soooo.... will a 'normal' PVR record Freeview (not Freesat) programmes whilst I'm watching something else with just the one aerial cable???

I've got freeview.
twin recorder + can watch another
(live or recorded) at the same time.
All on aerial with coax

If I got round to it I would have
the freesat though

BUT - I will NEVER give money to sky lot

On a technical note:

Ordinary TV cable is no good for Sat TV (LNB to Box) It looses too much signal in the cable.

You need CT100 spec minimum or preferably CT125 spec cable.
Its not that expensive and is the correct cable for the job.

I dont bother with TV cable for anything, I just use Sat TV cable for everything.

TV works in the Frequency band 470-860Mhz
Sat TV works between 900-1900Mhz from the dish (LNB) to the box. The higher frequencies used need the better spec cable.

Hence you need the higher spec cable.
there is less signal loss with the correct cable, and hence less trouble with crap picture / blocking on the screen.

Also dont forget to seal the end at the LB with some self amalgamating tape to stop the water / damp getting in.
Also put in a small loop of cable just before the LNB. this makes the water drip off the cable and not run up into the joint.

It all makes for a good and more reliable installation.
