I'm looking for a convertible classic car. Something that's a two plus two, it'd probably get used four or five times year for some touring/camping around europe, so I'd like it to be tax exempt and reasonably cheap to insure.

A Triumph Stag ticks all the boxes, but I just don't like the look of them.

Any ideas?

what about the spitfire? looks better and still has a large boot and it feels spacious inside. Next door has one, not a bad car, though if it was mine I'd fit a pinto and type 9 and junk that lame Triumph engine.

Reading the requirements I was thinking Triumph Stag - then you put me straight

Morris Minor? not very sporty I'll grant you, but 4 seats, classic and available in rag top form.

Same goes for VW Beetle too!

Maybe something American? might be heavy on fuel though

I spotted a really nice looking Lotus Elan 2+2 on http://www.uksportscars.com/ the other day. I know it's not convertible, but it ticks every other box (depending on what you call cheap I guess).

It's up for £10k, but it's a buyers market.

I think I really need a Tranny!!! My recent purcahses all seem to have been 8*4 feet!!

The Austin A40 Sports - Jensen bodied 1200cc , had many happy hour driving around in one of these , but try and find one now, not many people know they ever existed.

Thanks guys - I didn't actually expect there to that many cars that I'd not considered or heard of. The Reliant Scimitar is pretty close to the mark. The Karman too, although it's slightly more expensive and the price/availability of spares worries me slightly!

The Jeep/Landy idea is an interesting one too - I'll look into that. I'm not sure how well they'd do on the motorways with their gear ratios though.

i know you said you dont like it but the stag is the one, my dad restored one from ground up lovely car and sound awesome

Scimitar GTCs are great.

Stags are good too but more of a tourer than the Scimitar.
