I know this isnt a mini forum, but i havent yet found a specific forum where there is the same locost ethos and inginuity as on here.
Ive took rear subframe out. Looks rather big and bulky considerings its main purpose. I was wondering if it can be seriously cut down just leaving the
radius mounting points and coil overs fitted instead of the dry cone units? Obviously will need some strengthening etc.
If this is not possible (and id love to know why), is it possible to make a diy beam axle? Has anyone seen any plans?

if you look on e-bay, a guy has a soilid beams for sale now and again about £110.
Looking at them its just 1" box section, i have been told that getting the set up takes a while and some times they tend to fish tale, but if you
can do a locost then it should be ok.
not seen any plans or anything, but mini spares centre (?) used to sell them when i had a mini. no reason why it couldn't be done, but i wouldn't cut down a proper sub frame to do it

Some coilovers need inner arch mods as they dont quite fit even with the offset mounting.
Not 100% which ones but its something to watch out for
yes it can be done,and as been done lot's, intended to do it to my subframe but it was to rusty so bought a jonspeed beam axle instead,
Don't forget the rear subframe adds a significant structure between you and the car behind. A shunt from behind with one of those beam axles and the rear end would fold up like a newspaper. Not such a problem if you have a cage fitted perhaps, but for road use I'd leave the standard subframe in place personally.
you can get offset coil overs from GAZ these wil fit standard arch but you have to tap the flanges out inside the top of the arch were the top of shock goe's,, easy peasy job
