towing big
JoelP - 14/11/09 at 10:20 PM

well peeps, i know landies can tow 3.5 tonnes, and i know my vivaro can do 2. But does anyone know another sub 3.5 tonne van or car that can pull 3.5 tonnes, or at least more than expected? My jeep can do 2.6 apparently.

Basically the more i can pull, the fewer trips i need make to the tip!

I know about b+e, so no dire warnings about licenses please!

what about a Hummer?

Must have some use!

hummer towing capacity

Probably not very relevant, b ut it does direct to a chart that might help (even though it is US and not Leeds based!). http://auto.howstuffworks.com/auto-parts/towing/towing-capacity/vehicle/towing-capacity-chart.htm

i had a transit 150/330 ex RAC, that could if empty tow 3.5tonne, same as a 190/350, also a delica/shogun can tow 3.3tonnes, looking for a new tow vehicle to tow with, but i want power, like a v8 or big power diesel.

so far i'm thinking

ford galaxy 4x4 v6 but not sure what the 4x4 can tow
shogun 3.5 24v
rangerover/disco v8i
landcruiser.

Check the plate on the vehicle and the trailer.
I got cought at SVA with a single wheel Transit that had a train weight over.
The trailer was a huge plant trailer so had loads of capacity with a little 7 on the back but the Transit was plated to tow less weight than my V6 Galaxy

I'm pretty sure the Nissan Navara is 3000kg

speedyxjs - 15/11/09 at 08:43 AM

Vauxhall monarao could probably tow a planet

Doubt therel be many sub 3.5 car/ vans which will tow 3.5 tonne. apart front pickups like navaras or yankee trucks.

My bmw 525tds will pull 2.2 tonnes. Iv had a mk3 polo on the back and didnt even know it was there.

i've looked into transit towing a lot, and you do have to be carefull, the old 80/100/120 can legally to bugger all, but the 150/190 can tow loads, on the old smilly face transits from 1995-2000 you need the vans with 6 stud wheels, thats why the RAC use the 150 with 6 stud wheels, if you go for a later 2000+ van i think they are different again, the front drive vans can tow bugger all, but the rear drive vans can tow loads, the later rear drive vans were all 2.4 diesel or 2.3 petrol LPG, 2.0/2.2 diesel were all front drive, in my opinion the 2000+ petrol 300 van is best, because it is under class 7 MOT so can be MOT anywhere but can tow well, and is cheaper to run with the LPG than the diesel, and quieter, when i get one it will be getting an axle from a 2006+ as its available with a 3.77:1 axle for better motoerway cruising rather than the 5.1:1 thats factory.

cheers chaps. Ive always like the trooper too so its either that or a disco.

Its very odd that my van couldnt tow the jeep but the jeep, with its wobbly tyres and soggy suspension, can.

franky - 15/11/09 at 11:11 AM

Toyota landcruiser.

They can tow anything, come with a huge choice of engines and are better made than a disco/range rover.

it is indeed, but sadly not what i can afford!

If you check a classic RR handbook for towing limits and find the section referring to towing, I'm sure it mentioned 8 tonnes with linked braking (pneumatic). I may be wrong of course.

Land-Rover had some sort of special dispensation.
