Insurance: Quinn-Direct

I'm looking at taking out an insurance policy with quinn-direct that includes 'third party extension', allowing me to drive other peoples cars 3rd party. This is quite an attraction as it would allow my dad and I to share the driving in my dad's Landy when travelling to events.

When i rang to confirm that i would be eligible the kind young lady told me that I would be as long is the car was insured, wasn't a hire car or owned by an employer.

Now i'd also heard that commercial vehicles, jeep type vehicles and 2 seaters weren't included, however reading the policy booklet it only excludes....

• vans;
• car-vans;
• jeep-type vehicles with no seats in the back; or
• vans adapted to carry passengers.

I also heard that I would not be covered on cars insured at the same address however the policy booklet makes no mention of this.

So my question is... is there any other documentation I should be reading where they could exclude vehicles anywhere or has the policy changed since my friends took out theirs?

Just had renewal of one of our car policies today and it now specificaly states that "only the named main driver is now covered to drive a motor car not belonging to them".(this was highlighted ie bold !)

I think you misunderstood my post. I'm insuring my car with Quin-direct in my name (ie i am the named main driver), however this policy also covers me to drive other people's cars 3rd party.

Mine does with Esure - to me its nothing special and many policies cover driving another insured vehicle 3rd party. I wouldnt buy an insurance policy for this reason only thats for sure. You are only covered 3rd party after all - its the bare minimum requirement to drive another vehicle and if you did happen to have a bump the Landy wont be covered.

Have you looked into how much it would cost to be added as a named driver on your father's Landy insurance?? Adding my father to my insurance actually REDUCED my premium!!

The problem being... i'm only 18. Most companies will only offer it to people over the age of 21/25. To add me to the insurance on the Landy (Disco 2 TD5) would cost and extra £1.5k, and that's with the admiral multicar discount and reverting to TPFT.

The fact that the landy wouldnt be covered in a fault accident isnt a huge issue as most of the driving would be on motorways (relatively low risk...) and it isnt worth a huge amount.

Its all been thought through quite thoroughly, I just want to make sure that there isn't going to be any other hidden small print they can pull out if I were to have an accident.

I would put it to them directly, preferably via email, with a written reply (in English, no insurance jingo lingo) clearly stating whether or not you are covered.

Just noticed you were about 12 or 13 when you joined

That's a good plan. I've found it difficult getting straight answers from companies like that in the past, however I have claimed with quinn before (whoops) and even though i was at fault they were extremely helpful!

I was indeed 12 when i joined up... early starter!

When I was looking into getting a policy like that (So I could drive the Jag) most only allowed it to over 25's so be careful as it could be in small print somewhere as it is on my insurance (In one place it says I can but a page or so later says it only applies to over 25s.

I rang quinn earlier and confirmed that I would be eligible that was after confirming my birth date and occupation.
