The tin top seems to have developed a strange braking/abs issue. It only happens at slow speed (5-10 mph) and only when you turn left and brake at the same time (it's fine turning right and at speed). What it feels like is happening is the ABS seems to trigger and go into overdrive – you can really feel the brake pedal vibrate like you're on black ice.
I'm thinking it may be a wheel sensor or something (I'll whip the wheels off tomorrow and have a look)? Anyone got any other ideas to check? It's a Jag S-type.

Usually effects like this are down to cracked ABS reluctor rings on the one of the front wheels. If it is shrunk on toothed ring a visual inspection will show it up.

Most cheaper cars have toothed rings shrunk on the the cv joints water gets in between the ring and the cv joint rust forms and ring splits, usually more expensive cars built in the last 10 years have a more reliable system the rings built into the wheel bearing unit.

Replacements rings are available for a lot of cars but I don't know about the Jag.

most have moved on to magnet type

But yes the pickup ring can crack and float on the cv joint

Another vote for a cracked reluctor ring.
I had both mine go on my Suzuki but I got a new pair.
Not too difficult to fit.

Yeah ditto, had the same on 806.
- Very easy to find if its the case, i just said to dad 'it will be the abs ring' and stuck my head under. Yep, look... 3mm crack.

Check the brake discs as well. My last Mondeo did this at first but at any speed under braking cos previous owner didn't use it much and said he never went above 40mph. Some heavy brake tests and a bit more use and it went away. Was presumably rust and crud on the discs.

l go for cracked or corroded ring aswell. I had a rover that did that. Fine above 10mph.

OK, so I've had a look. No CV joints on the front, of course, as it's RWD. It has sealed sensor units integral to the hubs/uprights. Checked all the plugs, everything OK. What's interesting is the design of how the cable is connected to the sensors differs between driver and passenger side, which makes me suspect one of them has been replaced in the past? So, probably, the fix is the other will need replacing. Also looked at the rear, but can't see the reluctor rings. However, there is no sign of corrosion anywhere.
I then thought I'd take it out round some back roads to put some heat in the brakes, see if it clears any crud? Trouble is all this did was make the computer catch up with the fact there is a problem. It's decided to flash lots of error messages and disable the ABS and the DSC! Great in a way, as the problem has gone away (no ABS), but clearly I need to take it to the independent Jag specialists I know to get it looked at properly (and to reset the computer).
Looking on the bright side, driving back was great fun without the driver aids and 285 bhp to the rear wheels on a wet road and no LSD
