Mate of mine is looking at purchasing a Jag X type diesel around 4/5 years old with 50k miles.

Am I correct in saying this is the Mondeo floorpan & engine/gearbox?

Engines are available in 2.0 or 2.2, anyone know when they changed & is the 2.2 the more desirable lump to have.

Any other known issues with the car - particularly expensive ones!

2.2 is the best engine ever sold with the X-type. Floorpan is mondeo based.

Not sure about gearbox but i know the V6 petrol only used the block from a mondeo.

ETA - I havn't heard of any common faults with them either

I have just sold one!
2.2d sport,very under estimated car in my opinion.
I have had alot of cars,Audi BMW etc and i would pick the Jag everytime.
Make sure it has good history and not clocked!! i find at least 5 cars a week that have been clocked it really is getting a problem in the car trade now especially if your an honest one.

Yep, Mondeo underneath, floorpan brakes, steering, engine etc. Lots of these mechanical bits on the DB9 as well...

If I was in the market I would be looking at a newer pre 07 Ghia Mondeo for less money.

Based on my time as a QA engineer for the X type and CD132 Mondeo IMO the Ford is a much better built/engineered car.

Our steering system was designed for the Mondeo and never really worked on the X type. It squeaks and rattles on the Jag, rock solid on the Mondeo.

Only X type I would buy is the 4x4 estate version.

If its an automatic it will have the JATCO transmision used in a lot of cars these days and is known to be on the delicate side after 60,00 miles or so.

For some reason Jag and Landrover had more problems than some other manufacturers with them.

Wouldn't touch them with a barge-pole.
Had a 58 plate (brand new) last year when my 02 plate Audi A4 Avant got driven in to (as a replacement to the 08 C class someone hit! was a bad month m'kay!)
It drove like a boat, no power, felt worse than the old 05 plate Mondeo Zetec company car I used to drive. Wasn't impressed with the build quality, the radio wouldn't tune in and it drank like it was diabetic.
Even the leather interior wasn't comfy or supportive. I did about 2000 miles in it in the month and was glad to give it back, wish I could have had another C-Class as that was so much more of a nicer car than the X Type. In fact I was glad to get the Audi back

I am on my second Jag and it both have been fantastic. I do 50K in just over a year and are replaced at 18 month old. There is a lot of rot told about them being Mondeo,s they share a floor pan and some other parts but everything else is either respeced by Jag or specific. Mine is the estate 2.0ltr D this only has a 5 speed box whereas the 2.2 is 6 speed. Only downer on the whole car is that the spare wheel well is huge and the boot is smaller than others as a result. I will probably be getting another in the new year and I have a choice.

The 2.2 TDCi engine is prone to rather expensive injector and clutch/DMF problems.

I had a 2l diesel sport estate for a bit almost crippled me..
It had the sport seats which dug into my
leg and caused a lot of discomfort esp on long runs. I am quite big 1.9m amd 110 kg I could not get a comfortable seating position.
I also could never get anywhere near the advertised mpg - and that is not to do with the way I drive -I now have an audi a6 avant and I am getting the advertised mpg on this car and its bigger and more comfortable...

Other than this it was a nice car.
