TomTom map updates - off topic and asked before but..
carpmart - 11/12/09 at 10:10 AM

I know this has been done to death but I have searched and can't find the answer!

Anyway, I have an original TomTom Go300, you know the fat boxy one! I have the original maps on it from 4 years ago and they are now VERY out of date.

I'm a complete layperson with technology and my internet searches have shown loads of free map updates (I think!) but I'm unsure how to do it?

Does anyone know where I can send the TomTom or the SD card to get new maps installed so it just works out of the box when I get it back?

I ideally want something which shows the speed limit for the road as well, is this possible?

Thanks in advance for your help!

The second part to my question is can I get TomTom maps with postcode function installed on my BMW satnav system? Its of 2003 vintage and its a widescreen version in an E39 530 sport.

Ta!

If you just want an upgrade of the current map you own, then plug your TomTom into the dock, and connect to your computer. It should download the free upgrades from the Tomtom website (will update your software at the same time).

If you want a new map, then the ebst bet is to buy a new card. You can buy these directly from tomtom (online), or look on ebay. You can't copy maps, as you need an activation code for a new map to work...

Hmm

That's not what I see on the TomTom website, it seems to want to charge me for an update?

Can you link to the free updates page?

you onl;yt get free updates if you have the latest map installed on a Satnav you have just bought. As yours is a few years old you are no longer entitled to this.

I subscribe to their quarterly update service, this gives me a new map every quarter for £30 per year.

It costs about £70 odd the first time according to their website. £30 odd for the maps, £30 odd for something else. Seems a bit steep to me, even if you only pay £30 a year after that.

You cant get any free updates anymore. Just software ones.
Ive got a 920t and the software update for that has messed up my tomtom and they haven't bothered trying to fix the issue, so thousands of people have a tomtom that takes ages to load.

Thanks for the replies so far but I still have the question, does anyone know where I can send the unit off (or the SD card) for a refresh of the maps on it?

Also, no one has respond to this, please can anyone confirm if TomTom software be installed into a BMW navigation system? Does anyone know where I can get this done?

Thanks!

Hi Harvey - The BM will use a bespoke system I imagine and TT will not be compatible with that. You may well be able to get newer discs for it but you'll not get it to run a different system like TT. Sorry, you're stuck with the BM system!
