Re-using nylocs
UncleFista - 15/8/02 at 10:53 AM

I'm changing both lower ball-joints on my daily driver this weekend. To do it I have to remove the hub carriers, to do this I have to remove the nylocs that hold the anti-roll bar drop links and track rod ends to the hub. Is it possible to re-use nylocs if I use some thread locking compound ?
I wouldn't normally "bodge" but my local bolt and nut supplier will be shut.

Cheers for reading

You'll get different views from different people...

My opinion (a little thing, but mine own ) is that the old rules about non-reuse came from the old lock nuts that had a fibre insert. Once they were taken off they wouldn't grip properly again.

Modern nylon Nyloks (?) are still tough to fit after 4 or 5 refits, and just as hard to get off, so I reckon they should be OK.

As for me, I've avoided using the Nyloks at all during the assembly phase and, once I've finished, I'll go round and replace the ordinary nuts where required.

cheers,

David
