Mobile phone recommendation?
MikeCapon - 2/1/10 at 01:04 PM

I don't even have one of these Spent enough time with what was effectively an electronic leash to appreciate not having one now. SWMBO does however and her current phone (some kind of old Motorola) is pretty much dead/worn out.

I've been charged with finding a replacement and given my level of interest in mobiles I need your help.

Her criteria are Tactile screen, GPS

Mine are Reliable, Not too dear

What do you chaps and chapesses recommend?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Here's why it has to be a Nokia 5800

This is also pretty cool - an inclinometer / angle finder.

nokia 5800, mine takes a right bashing and has had a really hard life and works as well as the day it was new. Fab phone highly recomended

You can probably get a Google G1 cheap from T-Mobile just now (it's last year's model). It'll be contract rather than PAYG though.

Forget all the wanabees, Iphone 3gs all the way.

I've got a 5800 and I'm happy with it. SWMBO has a HTC Hero and she's happy with that

Nokia 5800 excellent phone.

I hate iphones and anything apple. They do loads but i dont like them. My 5800 does most of what that does.

I think most people that hate Iphones have never owned one......

Though i do agree perhaps not suitable for your wife if she does want just a phone...

And not cheap either.

Get an Iphone. I have one and it still impresses me after 3 months. Awsome phone.

Ummm...first question - Pay as you go, or contract?

That will determine what's "cheap"; if she's on a £45/month contract, virtually every phone is cheap whereas PAYG somewhat limits you...

Thanks guys for all your helpful replies. Much appreciated.

She's on a 33€ Pro contract with Orange France. So yes, most phones are effectively free, including the Nokia 5800. Also, it's not going to be used for web access or email. Bizarely all she ever does with it is make and receive calls.

All I do is make calls (and texts) and you don't need some uppity touch screen thing for that! Go old school and have real buttons, I got the Sony W595 and it does exactly what she wants.

Having said that stepson's got the 58something like everyone's recommending and he's had no problems (with the phone anyway, the bill's different!)
