Private Plate Daftness!
scootz - 25/2/10 at 05:03 PM

No problem with private plates, but why-oh-why do folk come up with such bloomin contrived nonsense!?

The latest subject of my ire is.. H15 LTS which is attached to a rather nice Esprit currently for sale. The plate is a unique selling point as it apparently spells 'HIS LOTUS'.

NO IT DOESN'T... IT SPELLS H15 LTS!!!!

Caps off... and breathe!!!

I totally agree with you, private plate owners who think in some strange place that they actually read different. Im mean whats the point anyway.

Charlie_Zetec - 25/2/10 at 05:10 PM

I have a personalised plate - L8 CWR.

And do you know what it spells? Nothing. It's my initials. Nothing more, nothin less.

Admittedly the L8 part was quite appropriate, as I'm often tardy for things....

mad4x4 - 25/2/10 at 05:13 PM

My private plate is

UVD 11 H and means jack sh*t. Got it off an old landy before I scraped it

rayward - 25/2/10 at 05:18 PM

Sometimes, just sometimes you can get a decent one for not much.
My brother (Roadkill on here) got L33 3OND for next to nowt and it looks (even using the correct legal font) suprisingly like "Lee Bond".

A bargain for a plate that should last a lifetime

locostbuyer83 - 25/2/10 at 05:26 PM

A9 BTO

liam.mccaffrey - 25/2/10 at 05:28 PM

I'm going to buy P100 ?DE at some point, to go on my ford P100 predictably. Plus the DE suffix is local.

back in 93 L14 MMC was auctioned for not much. It spells my name and I don't think its too contrived.
Wouldn't mind that one

Perfectly fine... carry on!

sucksqueezebangblow - 25/2/10 at 05:35 PM

How do mine do;

BU54 BYE on the 'Busa engined Vortx
and T15 CGA on the Disco ('tis CGA?)

Both properly spaced with no modifications.

Mine's similar N8 + my initials. Harmless and reasonably cheap, but IMHO having to squint, insert letters that aren't there or falsely adjust the characters in order to see what it is supposed to say is going too far

zilspeed - 25/2/10 at 05:45 PM

I have one of these.

A Citroen Synergie.

and could easily be tempted to put this plate on it.

Exactly as it appears here.
That's sad, isn't it ?
Incidentally, it's £250 all in from the DVLA and I reckon it might actually be quite a sellable plate.

S111 NRG
S111 NRG

Danozeman - 25/2/10 at 05:45 PM

I saw one today on a Navara where the front was spaced out to says MARKS 1

the rear said M888 RKS or something similar. He was driving like a C*** aswell

owelly - 25/2/10 at 05:47 PM

Yeah. Why bother with poxy private plates?..

russbost - 25/2/10 at 05:53 PM

Q is does anyone know the whereabouts of RUS 805T??? - can't be worth more than a couple of hundred quid!

gottabedone - 25/2/10 at 06:08 PM

I think it's quite amusing that KN is a prefix now - especially if your car was registered in 03..............................KN03
......................would particularly suit the kn0b that tried to run into me on the motorway this morning

eznfrank - 25/2/10 at 06:08 PM

My old man once bought a tatty old VW Derby for about £50, the reg was EWE 6V, which he sold for £550 if I remember correctly - good deal for my dad but who on earth wanted that!!

I do like the ones such as MAG1C which Paul Daniels apparently owns, or P1lot but most are gash.

My mate has bought a few plates for him, his missus and the kids all with the last three same letters, but now as he's bought 4 it has pushed the price of those letters up by a few hundred quid even though it's only him that seems to be buying them!!

RU58 OST is available from DVLA

£799, mind!

ALso, a search for KN08 reveals this

morcus - 25/2/10 at 06:50 PM

I personally don't like private plates at all and think they take away from the purpose of the number plate itself. Going back to the original point though, people who claim their number plate says something when it doesn't is annoying, though I'm more annoyed when they've got a show plate thats spaced wrong to make it look more like it spells something it doesn't. I really don't get how people get away with driving with illegal plates as its so obvious, and its an MOT failiur (My dad failed an MOT because a garage made him a plate where one of the numbers wasn't think enough by a few millimetres), do they swap them over for the MOT?

russbost - 25/2/10 at 06:51 PM

But I don't have a '58 vehicle!

I wonder why you thought of KN08 when you were looking at "my" reg???

dogwood - 25/2/10 at 07:01 PM

Mine is.

5460 VK 16.. is that SAGO?...

My ex-copper neighbour does.

He's (the family) got
P33LEY
P333LEY
P33LCY and
P333LCY the latter two with a black screw in the centre of the C.

Can you guess what his surname is ? And quite apt for an ex cop.

main82000 - 25/2/10 at 07:19 PM

hi all
i must say i do like private plates bought 1 for my son when he was 1 now 3 that spells j88 kej if you cant see what it is his name is jake johnston and a couple of weeks ago got 1 for the wife which is d20 naj her name donna the only problem is i dont have 1 as i cant afford c1 on a good note my son has made 150 quid on his plate says the valuation email i keep gettin

gingerprince - 25/2/10 at 07:20 PM

I think it's all a load of twaddle. I'm currently applying via deed poll to have my name changed to Q*** KCP

fazerruss - 25/2/10 at 07:24 PM

I saw a plate on a saab on the M1 near Leeds. I would love it for my bike or car as it spells my name and even the last letter is correct for my surname RU55 ELB

scootz - 25/2/10 at 07:29 PM

I'm pleased that your pleased Main82000... better still that your wife and boy are pleased... but I don't get where you make the names Jake or Donna from those reg's.

Maybe I suffer from some sort of 'plate-colour-blindness'... I just can't see the message amongst the letters and digits!

Mad Dave - 25/2/10 at 07:52 PM

I know its sad but I've got F14VES (my surname is Flavell)

Marcus - 25/2/10 at 07:57 PM

Another worth having on this forum is Jon Ison's

he managed to pester the DVLA to issue JON 150N

local for me and scootz is '*SS'
but they haven't issued any of them for a long time (more than 20 years) so alot of them are worth a fair bit now

a mate of mine thought his car was special just because it had a 6 digit reg (bog standard Y reg silver astra hatch)
but 5 years later I get a Y reg focus from the same garage and its got almost the same reg

Kriss - 25/2/10 at 08:39 PM

i think they are harmless and on the right cars look very cool.

majoirty are for cocks though, forinstance I saw V6 6EXY on a clio V6!

was my car lol, but loved it and paid £300 for it

Simon - 25/2/10 at 08:46 PM

Back in about '95, I got excited about the plate S1MON coming up in about '98.

Then heard it had sold for £150k - oh well!

Thats excellent, my dad has F1ves, his name is francis ives!

se7en - 25/2/10 at 08:52 PM

Here in Northern Ireland we use a different sequence of plates and some of our plates can make good money from English buyers. I sold the plate of my missus's Starlet. I believe it to be on a Range Rover somewhere around Liverpool. I got a whole £50 for XIJ 2550.

I think that plates that read easily as a name are perfectly OK but the KN03's that think that their plate reads like their name (only if you are a blind man on a horse) need help.

A while back I was looking for a plate for my daughter for her 1st car. I was looking for H64NOO or H84NOO or H94NOO.
My reasoning for this plate for my daughter, Oonagh, was that when you look in your mirror you would know that Oonagh was behind you.

If anyone on here knows where I can get any of the above plates I am still interested.

Mark Allanson - 25/2/10 at 09:03 PM

I tried to buy F4RTS which DVLA had up for £399 but after I had given my card details, they withdrew it!

Mad Dave - 25/2/10 at 09:12 PM

When I bought my plate I remember seeing F4RTY which amused me

Is mine ok? - V10 RTX

Steve G - 25/2/10 at 09:35 PM

Sister's ex has a cracker - SH17 on his Bmw 3 series coupe. The cops dont like him for some reason even though his name is S Hughes

rickys2000 - 25/2/10 at 09:48 PM

A bit shallow I know, but I have just bought V13NTO for my Viento. My daily drive plate is V8OOY and its on a V8

David Jenkins - 25/2/10 at 10:19 PM

Not a chav plate, but a few years ago I saw "B1" on a grand old 1950's Bentley.

How much would that be worth!

Peteff - 25/2/10 at 10:55 PM

Round the corner from us there was a Volvo 360 with the number VWA 110Y which would have made VW ALLOY. We put a bit of tape on R155 EAD round at the bike shop and made PISS EAD

eznfrank - 25/2/10 at 11:14 PM

I think the funniest/Dumbest ones are all the morons who had BMW X5'S and bought plates starting X5, I've seen more than a few of those now on other similar cars.

kipper - 26/2/10 at 01:27 AM

some years ago I bought FAT3OY, for not much money, one add in the Sunday times for offers netted me 10 grand .
Still looking for another winner .
People still call me fat boy though.
Denis.

swanny - 26/2/10 at 09:01 AM

i think i've seen fatboy around here on a big 4X4 i reckon.

Hold on a minute, this is my car and my plate. Nearly everyone who has ever seen the car in the flesh has comented on the plate as HIS LOTUS. Of course i know LTS doesn't spell LOTUS, LOTUS spells LOTUS but i am trying to sell the car so i'm trying to make it look as atractive as possible to as many potential buyers as possible. Sorry you think it's nonsense but not everyone is the same as you, do you really need to rant on about it

A whole new level of daftness

quote:
The third most expensive license plate in the world was sold in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, cementing the UAE as a vanity-plate record holder.

A plate bearing solely the digit ‘7’ was sold in Abu Dhabi for 17 million dirhams, or $4.6 million, in a government auction on Saturday.

GeorgeM - 26/2/10 at 06:44 PM

well it wasn't me

Ninehigh - 27/2/10 at 08:27 AM

Sorry the taker of the biscuit has got to be those that have their name on it, only it's so vague they then have to have their name in smaller letters underneath to let you know what the plate's supposed to say.

The best one I saw made no sense at all until I looked in the mirror, Dave W... No idea how they made it now
