Lifting and moving a speaker
02GF74 - 10/8/10 at 10:07 AM

Can you think of how to make a small trolley/jack/lift type thing to move a speaker?

Speaker is about 40 kg on spikes = damn heavy. The trolley would go under the base then have some way of lifting the speaker, maybe 25 mm so the spikes are clear of the carpet. The trolley will have castors that allow the speaker to be moved.

I suspect that the effort in design and making such a thing would be more hassle than removeing the spikes and shoving the speaker about to its final position, then refitting the spikes.

but hey, were is the challenge in that?

so what can you come up with?

pallet pump truck?

Sack barrow

buy some casters and some box section off cuts, and weld it all up?

sorry - should have said it is not to move them from A to B, but to fine tune them for positioning when listening to them, such as toe in.

the problem with removing spikes is that the position may change when I need to lift them up to get the spikes in.

currently thinking of using wedged shaped blocks of wood so that speakers sit on top so can be moved around, then blocks pulled away to drop speakers onto the floor.

I'm glad someone else said that!

Would it really take 2 people to lift 40kgs??? My girlfriend is 60kg and I can lift her!

Man up!

James I don't think your girlfriend will appreciate you posting her weight on the Internet lol 9 3/4 stone in old money

Yeah - prepare to get savate-chopped James (unless you've politely understated her weight) .

O2GF74 - could you not just lift up one side then place something like metal jam jar lids under the spikes, then repeat for other side. The lids should allow you to slide the speakers about a bit, then take them out afterwards.

2 plates isn't that hard to lift.

the hard part is hold up an awakwrd shape and then palcing it accuratelty on a carpet - as you get close to position, the spikes catch, you lift up with the whole lot moving so you have lost position.

nick205 - 10/8/10 at 01:10 PM

SWMBO won't like multiple spike holes in the carpet - rust me, been there, done that and had the bollocking

The obvious answer has to be a sack barrow surely?

Even if you had to customise it slightly by narrowing the load plate.

Have you looked at a gas bottle trolley as used by welders? In effect a narrow sack barrow.

Errr, she's 5'10" and has a 6 pack! I don't think I have much to worry about!

At 60kg that's a BMI of 18.9 which is the very low end of normal weight. She doesn't have an ounce of fat on her! When you're a fighter you rather rapidly get over that girly business of 'not liking to talk about your weight' as it's a constant question and diet it all-important!

Don't believe me? She's the one on the left in the red top at Sunday afternoon Savate training.

Savate in the park
Savate in the park

Cheers,
James

If you want her to open you a can of whoop-ass maybe!

How much fine tuning are you thinking of? I'm getting images of you sitting in your chair thinking "Nope, the front left one needs turning in about 1 degree 25 minutes"
