Very OT big cat sighting - road kill
balidey - 23/8/10 at 09:29 AM

Very OT I know, but this morning on way to work I think I saw a big cat.
Unfortunatly it was road kill. On the side of the road it looked very much like a big cat, the colour of it was like a lion, a sandy type colour. Looked to be about the size of an alsation dog. If I could I would have pulled over and took a picture, infact if its still there this evening and its safe to stop then I will.
Where it was it looked like it would have been struck by a vehicle, and I bet it gave the driver a real fright. I have hit a small kitty at low speed and I knew I'd hit it, so a big cat on a 60mph road would have made a big impact.

I have checked out local BBC news website and not heard anything, but I am sure hundreds of people have also seen it today.

On A16 near Peterborough, just north of Market Deeping. And I spoke to someone today that heard of a big cat sighting about 2 or 3 years ago near Crowland, which is not far across the fields.

Will update this evening if its still there later.

My money is on a dog... or a moggy.

I saw a sea rescue program on TV a few weeks ago, where several passengers on a ferry reported seeing a life raft at least 8' long in the Channel. After launching the RNLI and a helecopter, it turned out to be a... party balloon!

Drugs? Me officer? Never!

I did doubt my own eyes, I have always looked at these big cat sightings with scepticism, and it was very large from a distance, it caught my eye and then as I got closer and passed it I did my best to get a good look and it really did look like a big cat. So much so for me to write it up on here and I was really considering turning round or making a detour to go back and have a proper look, but I didn't. Now I am wishing I had so that I can either prove myself wrong or become famous for actually getting proof of big cats in the wild (OK, you can't really call the Fens the wild)

small deer perhaps.

If you think road kill is bad in a car. Try running over a freshly killed fox on a bicycle with no "mud" guards.

All sorts of blood and fox brains get sprayed up.

Not nice.

Matt

definitly not a fox. See those and badgers on the road side quite often.
Could have been a monkjack type deer, right size and colour. I have seen these (alive) in Spalding, just up the road. But (although not 100% sure) I think this thing had a long tail.

Or even a Muntjac Might be a different coloured badger, I've seen a few variations from grey to ginger.

Did it look like this?

muntjac
muntjac

A sabre toothed Muntjac yesterday.

Irony - 23/8/10 at 11:18 AM

I nearly clobberdonked several monkjacks the other day in my motor. They 'could' be mistaken for cats I suppose.

Altogether now one, two, three..
What's a piecost?

balidey - 23/8/10 at 04:45 PM

well, drove home past the scene and..... no body.
Either it wasn't dead and got up and limped off (to die later)
Or it was a big cat and another road user has nabbed it.
Or a big crow has taken it.
So now I'll never know.... which is really infuriating

... t'is the stuff that local legend is made of! Get down to the pub and spread the story of the 'Big Cat'!
