Tow Bar
James - 29/8/02 at 04:36 PM

I need a tow bar!!!
Fed up with not being able to move anything around that won't fit in the back of my Golf.

Anybody got any idea of ease/cost of fitting a tow bar to either by father's 'E' reg Granada or mother's 'M' reg Peugeot 405?

Do these things ever go second hand and what sort of money?

Cheers,

James

Melin made his own.
Now theres a clue.

there is actually a law now to say if your car is made after a certain year the tow bar has to be type approved and if it hasnt been made by an approved manufacturer it may fail mot

bet cha didnt know that

one of the disadvantages of having goverment run mot centres over here.... they know ALL the rules

I'm having a towbar fitted to my recently acquired Volvo estate for about £140. Not only is it a question of having correct bar, it's the wiring for the lights etc that's the main problem. Like for instance the indicators have to flash in unison and there has to be a audible warning of bulb failure on trailer lighting board. For £140 it was not worth the hassle of trying to do it myself.

How about waiting for college to start, I was looking at getting one fitted, then the chap at nightschool said I could fit it there, just cost price on the tow-bar...

Got a type approved one fitted at towsure in sheffield (don't know if they have other branches) for about 70 quid including electrics. Not the shineyest thing ever but it certainly tows things!

philgregson - 29/8/02 at 09:39 PM

Hey just occured to me - with a decent diesel in my locost I could fit a tow bar and get myself a caravan and.........Help!

Metal Hippy™ - 29/8/02 at 09:41 PM

Does anybody have a gun?

philgregson - 29/8/02 at 09:46 PM

OK a caravan is silly but what about a trailer? what with having no boot and everything.

I can feel a book comming on - 'How to build a sports trailer for £50'

Bloody hell I'm a genius!!

chrisg - 29/8/02 at 10:06 PM

What about ABS and power steering, eh Hippy

Cheers

Chris

I'm only looking into them as we have them on the donor.

As I've already said, we might not use them.

They're far better ideas than a diesel and a towbar though.

I was quoted £320 to fit one to my 306 Cabrio but it was a posh removable thing (the only one they do). Then I was offered a Volvo 760GLE with one on it already for £200. Think I know what I'm going to do...!

don't tell me, you're gonna buy the volvo, cut off the tow bar, and weld it onto the cabriolet....am I right?! Oh, and james, why are you not fitting the tow bar to YOUR golf? instead of M or D's cars??

Because that's what parents' cars are for

Cos if he fits it to his car he'll have to pay for it stupid . What you want is a nice van, I've bought a nissan vanette 5 seater and everything fits in it. With the back seat folded up it takes an 8 foot load.

Have a look in the back of the
HAYNES AUTOMOTIVE WELDING MANUAL
All the plans are there,Chapter 9 building a utility trailer.

i dont think anyone will be running off to spain with a little thai bird on the back of that one eh!!

johnston - 1/9/02 at 06:16 PM

seen a gd 1 for kartin band gear about when i used ta play

a guy had a nissain pariare (a big estate/small mpv thing) bought another choppes it just behind the windscreen welded in a panel strengthened the floor and hey presto a trailer lights an all and looked real tidy behind a car the same type and colour

any way why doesnt sum1 bulid a trailer usin the bac halv of a locost give ya somewhere for ur teas and sarnies at the shows

Metal Hippy™ - 2/9/02 at 12:56 AM

Never mind a trailer, if somebody can find me an Escort van or something for an absolute bargain I'll happily transport anything they want to the shows subject to it fitting in said van.

I can assure you I'm not gonna cut holes in the bumper of my 'big-bumper' style golf! Not at £300 a piece anyway!

Also, I won't be keeping it for much longer whilst my mother will probably run her Peugeot into the ground which'll take a few years.

Cheers,

James

James, with regard to mot's etc, i fitted a towbar and electrics to my cavalier and they didnt even look at it... most mot stations wont bother..... I can get you a towbar for the granny, with electrics for about £60/£70 all in, and new!!!!! fit yourself. I have fitted them to loads of motors, its easy!!! even the wiring only takes 10 mins.. let me know.
