Claiming income tax back
Moorron - 2/6/11 at 12:49 PM

Hi guys just a quick question regarding the above. I think i am owed some spending money after having a messy 2010 year with jobs (PAYE over payments) but i have no idea how to claim it back. Ive used an online calculator and my P45's and now my P60 and its showing i am right.

How do i do this? Looking on the goverment website it tells me to send all paperwork to them by post and they will work it out. Do i need to give them a detailed letter too or can i pop into a local tax office to do it? Never done it before.

Cheers lads.

Simples but tedious, submit a tax return. Worked for me.
You dont have to wait until the taxman sends you one.
Have fun spending your rebate.

If you have always been paid via the PAYE system you wont need to fill a tax return.

Simply call your local tax office, tell them you believe there has been an error and ask them to review your tax payments from the year X to the year Y... They will do this and send you a summary of earnings and tax paid for each year plus a cheque/invoice depending on what they find.

I did this a few years ago and got quite a bit back... It takes time, so keep chasing them!

I've done the same recently. Find your p60, look up the tax office code and use the tool on the hmrc site to find your tax office (mine was in bradford despite there being one in sheffield where i live).

Send a letter with details of what you've earnt and what yopu think you should get back and they will double check, and send you the cheque. Took them about 2-3 months when i did it, with a couple of chaser calls.

When I reclaim for my parents I use the downloadable R40 form, when I paid too much PAYE due to tax code my accountant offset it against my Self Employed income and this was done at Tax Return time.

Cheers lads, my local tax office is.....newcastle! yet i have one listen in Telford. I will ring them and ask and see what happens.

Its not much money, but its mine and i could do with a pick me up.
